Amazon.co.uk Review
Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world's most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond--prematurely, it turned out. Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore, and Lazenby's subsequent career fizzled, yet this one-hit wonder is responsible for one of the best Bond films. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose latest master plan threatens the world's crops with agricultural sterilisation. Bond teams up with smooth international crime-lord Draco (Gabriele Ferzetti) and falls in love with--and marries--his elegant daughter, Tracy (Diana Rigg). Bond monogamous? Not at first; after all he has Blofeld's harem to seduce. Lazenby hasn't the intensity of Connery but he has fun with his quips and even lampoons the Bond image in a playful pre-credits sequence. Rigg, fresh from playing sexy Emma Peel in The Avengers, matches 007 in every way. Former editor Peter Hunt makes a strong directorial debut, deftly handling the elaborate action sequences with a kinetic finesse and a dash of humour. Though not a hit on its original release, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has become a fan favourite and the closest the series has come to capturing the spirit of Ian Fleming's books. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com -- On the DVD: Affable and intelligent director Peter Hunt explains his ambition to take the series back to the original spirit of Fleming's books with this instalment. Out of all the Bond DVDs, his commentary track--interspliced with comments from other cast and crew members--is one of the most entertaining and informative as he chuckles over some of his more felicitous touches. Although sadly Diana Rigg is absent from the "making of" featurette, an older and wiser George Lazenby reveals how he acquired one of Connery's suits and went to the same barber in order to make himself look credible for the part. Hunt and others are disarmingly frank about how Lazenby's arrogance on set won him few friends. The late lamented Desmond Llewelyn, who played the boffin "Q", presents an amusing guide to the greatest gadgets of the series and explains how he can barely work a can opener in real life. The rest of the technical features are all present and correct and up to this series' usual high standards. --Leslie Felperin

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Bond film, 20 Jan 2003
It has often been argued that this would have been the greatest of the Bond films, had Sean Connery taken the role. Unfortunately it seems likely that Connery's humourous slant on the character would have seemed out of place, with the unconventional romantic themes of this sixth entry in the Bond saga. Contrary to popular belief, Lazenby is a revelation as the secret agent torn between Her Majesty's government and Tracey (a fantastic performance by Diana Rigg). Lazenby handles the traditional humour of the series well, whilst the lack of gadgets allows him to show Bond as a multifaceted character. He is particulary adept at the fight sequences. This greatly contrasts to the increasingly unbelieveable aspects of more recent entries. The direction is exhilirating, with several glamourous locations and fast paced action sequences. On Her Majesty's Secret Service has some of the best dialogue of the saga, allowing for more interesting potrayals from supporting players (notably Bernard Lee). Unfortunately the only weak parts of the film involve Telly Salavas as Bond's nemesis, who appears to have been miscast. A fantasic attempt to make Bond seem more human, whilst not sacrificing the expected glamour and excitement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 4 April 2002
By A Customer
Personally I can not see why this film is not held by the majority as as good as if not better than any of the Connery films. George Lazenby it seems is as fitting in the role of Bond than anyone else in this fantastic film. The plot is solid and gripping and is graced by the presence of an excellent cast including Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas. The film has feel about it that was lacking in earlier films. The emotional scenes I found impossible to imagine any other Bond actor in which is why George Lazenby should not be regarded as the wooden, one-off Bond as he made the part his own. It is a shame that Lazenby only made this one film but I think that it is wonderful that he did because this film shines out from all the other Bond films of the 60s and 70s. It is also a shame that OHMSS, after such an emotional conclusion had to be followed up by the insincere and slap-stick Diamonds Are Forever, when the producers had given themselves firm building blocks for plenty more films of this calibre. This film is one of the best in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance, 24 Feb 2002
By Mr. A. P. Venables "andi02" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service is regarded by many as being the best film in the entire series. The plot, which is based very closely on the Ian Fleming novel, concerns Bond's attempts to track down his nemesis, Ernst Blofelt. Make no mistake; this is James Bond par excellence.

George Lazenby stars as James Bond and he suits the story well. Lazenby gives us a very natural and boyish portrayal of 007. Whilst he does not have Connery's charisma or Dalton's acting ability I do feel his performance works very well for the film. Lazenby's Bond is more down to earth, almost to the point of being ordinary. The Bond character is shown in a very different light in this film, he is more committed, slightly less arrogant and briefly displays his feelings. The reason why the story works so well for Lazenby is that you can really believe that he is falling in love. And it is the love story that makes OHMSS so memorable.

Diana Rigg is beautiful in this film and really pulls off the rather difficult role of the emotional damaged Tracy. Terry Salvalas conveys the sinister nature of Blofelt without sending him up. All the characters are well handled and when the adventure story kicks into gear the excitement doesn't let up until the end. Of all the films in the series this one also possesses the most visual flair. OHMSS is less cynical in tone than the Connery entries and is a great deal more emotionally engaging as a result. John Barry's score adds considerably to the overall effect.

The DVD extras are insightful and informative. This is truly great stuff.
