Amazon.co.uk Review

For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skilfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night. --Jim Emerson

2.0 out of 5 stars Special edition? More like a joke edition!, 12 Aug 2007
By R. Green "Greensleeves" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
To call this 2 disc set a 'special edition' is to insult all those film lovers who revere this film as one of the greatest movies ever made. The first disc contains a poor quality, worn print of the feature presented in an unfamiliar format and an even poorer quality trailer. The second disc contains extracts only from Hitchcocks American Film Institute Life Acheivment Award ceremony and a couple of short interviews. The 2nd disc runs all of 49 minutes! It's shocking that this appears to be the best that Universal can give us as a 'special edition'. What a joke!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! The best film of all time - easily., 15 July 2004
By Mr. D. PMartin (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am nearly thirteen years old and first saw the Alfred Hitchcock film 'Psycho' about 18 months ago. Hearing the opening violin music sent shivers down my spine and I instantly knew I was going to love the film. It has a storyline so magnificent that it will not be an anticlimax. The soundtrack by Bernard Hermann is amazing, completely revolutionary for its time. I loved the film and it is my all-time favourite.
For my 12th birthday I invited my friends over. We went shopping and then they wanted to watch a film at my house. I picked 'Pschyo.' At first the group of girls were scornful - comments such as 'it's in black and white, how boring,' were thick on the ground.
However within ten minutes of the film beginning my friends were bewitched by its magic. They watched spellbound as Janet Leigh's character died in the shower and I had to rewind the second murder and play it again at least three times before they were satisfied. The ending shocked and dazed them and as the film drew to a close (with Marion Crane's car being dragged from the lake) they were all declaring this 'SO the scariest film ever!'
Needless to say, none of them were happy about the light being turned off that night leaving them in the dark with Norman Bates's face grinning menacingly at them in their mind...
A great film! Classic, classic movie suitable for anyone - it will shock you, but you will never again be able to resist the 'high' of adreneline watching 'Psycho' gives you.

5.0 out of 5 stars We all go a little mad sometimes, 8 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Psycho [VHS] [1960] (VHS Tape)
I can't write a review of Psycho without including some SPOILERS - so if you don't know the plot, don't read this review!

'Psycho' is great cinema, from the word 'Go'. Hitchcock constructs a standard scenario (bored female employee succumbs to temptation and steals a large sum of money from her boss, then flees town to start a new life elsewhere), and then knocks the audience for six by having the female star (Janet Leigh as Marion Crane) stabbed to death in the shower. When Marion is murdered, the initial plotline is revealed as a red herring and the real story begins - the investigation into who's doing the killing at the Bates Motel. There are so many moments of greatness in this film: the notorious shower scene, many scenes of suspense in the house on the hill (incidentally based on a house in a 1925 Edward Hopper painting) and - scariest of all - the swinging-lightbulb scene where Norman's mother is finally revealed... Wonderful cinema - better than any sequel or remake.
