Amazon.co.uk Review

The story of Fortress takes place in drastically overpopulated America of the year 2017, where each woman is allowed only one pregnancy. John Brennick (Christopher Lambert) and his wife Karen (Loryn Locklin) flee to Mexico when she becomes pregnant after the death of their first child. They are captured by border police and sent to the Fortress, a subterranean high-security prison owned by the Men-Tel corporation and operated by "Zed-10", an omnipotent computer system, and a sadistic, genetically "enhanced" warden (Kurtwood Smith) who has nefarious plans involving Brennick's wife and unborn child. Along with his cellmates (including Jeffrey Combs, a favourite of director Stuart Gordon), Brennick plots a breakout and Fortress shifts into auto-pilot action mode.

After making his reputation with such audacious horror films as From Beyond and Re-Animator, Stuart Gordon graduated to a bigger budget with Fortress but his penchant for exploitation remains deliriously intact. While borrowing elements from a variety of better sci-fi movies, Fortress indulges every prison-flick cliché, but does it with such enjoyable B-movie vigour that it qualifies as a bona-fide guilty pleasure (indeed, it deserves to be ranked with James Cameron's original Terminator in terms of its budgetary ingenuity). Featuring such giddy (and gory) devices as "intestinators" (deadly obedience devices implanted in prisoners' bodies) and a torturous "Mind Wipe Chamber", this is really just a drive-in action movie with lofty ambitions and the schlocky script hasn't a prayer of rising above the level of juvenile popcorn fodder. But there's no denying the energy and enthusiasm that Gordon brings to the film, which understandably became a global box-office hit and spawned a 1999 sequel starring Lambert and Pam Grier. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure....., 13 Jun 2009
By Barbie Bino (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fortress [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
We all know that Christopher Lambert is no DeNiro and his movies are.. well... dodgy in the main. I got this movie in the bargain bucket because I was running low on sci-fi I hadn't seen. I expected a dodgy B movie. What a surprise I got!! This film is actually really good!!!

Lambert is not that wooden in it! The concept and story is excellent. The movie is exciting and largely believable. As has been said by another reviewer - there are some silly moments but if you like sci-fi and you like action i challenge you not to enjoy this!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Under-rated sci-fi film for the highlander generation, 16 April 2008
This review is from: Fortress [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
Being a big fan of the Highlander films (excluding 4-5, including
search for vengeance)and Christopher lambert I bought fortress years
ago on vhs expecting pretty much the same sort of fair as Highlander
and I was nicely surprised.

What surprised me the most was how watchable fortress is, I must have
watched my old vhs dozens of times and to be honest im still not tired
of it now.

The plot is very easy to get into, if a little clicé but that doesnt matter
you dont need to think with fortress because it is good old straight forward
action fair that any sci-fi fan can enjoy especially on a rainy day.

Production value wise Fortress is almost B-movie but not quite,
meaning that sometimes the effects and sets can seem a little ropey
but then in contrast some scenes are very well done with some effects
stealing the show from the actors.

Speaking of the actors, they do quite a passable job of drawing you into
the story, although lambert hardly has to do anything as his portrayal
of the wounded, survivalist hero is pretty much the same role he has in
every film he's in.

Onto the dvd release, its pretty much what you expect from a lesser known
action film. The dvd really hasnt had any money spent on it, the menu
is a old style still image with navigatable buttons and the sound quality
is just basic dvd fair.
The one major downside is that the picture quality isnt too different
to my old vhs, with grains and dirt showning on the picture.
But it doesnt really detract from the watchability of the film at all
its just a bit dissapointing especially in this age af HD picture.

All in all its an average release of a very enjoyable no brainer action movie

To quote/ alter some well know song lyrics by calvin harris "you will
have love for this film if you were born in the 80's....the 80's YeaH!"
