I saw this on TV originally and found it absolutely fascinating. Angela, played by Keeley Hawes, leads two very different lives in this film. In her 'real' life she lives on a council estate in London and she does a good imitation of a working class London accent. In her other life she pretends to be from an upper middle class background and speaks accordingly. She lies, cheats and steals, and neglects her children in order to live the other life and becomes more and more involved with her upper class friends and their lifestyles. The object of all this is to get a wealthy titled husband. She is very convincing in both roles. I had never seen Keeley Hawes before this film and have been a big fan since. But now that I've located this film again, I'm disappointed to find it's only available on VHS. I'm not paying 30 pounds for a video! So, will live in hope that I'll find it one day on DVD.

I first watched The Beggar Bride when it was screened in the late 90's. Keely Hawes performance in this production is outstanding and is certainly worth watching again and again....The whole storyline is brilliant as it juxtaposes from each of Hawes's characters and drawes the viewer in right to the end.

It's a bit pricey at £30 though ! I can't think for the life of me why this isn't out on DVD.....it would sell like the preverbial Hot Cake !!!!!!

One thing is for sure, i'll be one of the first in the que if it was !
