1.0 out of 5 stars utter drivel, 21 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I've been surfing for most of my life, and this film depresses me more than words. Utter sold-out commercial junk, representing the worst mcdonalds-isation of the sport I love that I've ever seen.

High production values, terrible acting (surfers just can't act - I'm still scarred by Kelly Slater in Baywatch)and a plot that would be embarrased to be used for a porn film this film plumbs a low that even , well, I can't even think of something that bad.

If you still think surfers have blond hair and exclusivly wear quiksilver clothing, drive VW beetles and say 'dude' you'll probably love it. If you have salt-water in your veins, travelled, surfed, been to these places it'll drive you to tears.

If you want a real film showing the real life 'on the road' (ugh) then check out some of the grass roots indie surfing films popping up. Land of Saints, (landofsaints.com) is a good place to start.

1.0 out of 5 stars if youre a surfer youl hat this film, 29 Sep 2003

This film is lousy its so cheesy and commercialised, the acting is really bad and the storline is poor. Theres some good footage of large waves but if thats what youre after buy a proper surfing video like endless summer 2, september sessions etc. This is what hollywood thinks surfing is like and boy how wrong they are. If i could give this film a minus rating i would do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why I don't love country music.., 5 Feb 2005
Whether you've actually ever caught a green wave in your life, or simply enjoy the t-shirts and silly hair-cuts, chances are that you've been sufficiently exposed to (a version of) surf culture..and must therefore accept that to both wannabes and bona-fide wave sliders, the notion of surfing as metaphor for life is..at worst a well-worn cliche, but at best probably not such a bad metaphor at all really, especially if a sizeable part of your life does still revolve around the pursuit of evenly peeling walls of water. Why I love this film..Surfing has undergone many important changes since the acclaimed flick "Big Wednesday" (a lame and ludicrously cheesy offering in my humble view..despite a brief section affording us a glimpse of some impressive footwork in a nose-riding segment. One lone critic described the dialogue as being as wet as the waves they were riding)and I can't think of any other non-documentary film that has at least attempted to explore some of the more contemporary developments in surfing (namely tow-in surfing)in such an accesible and (allowing for a certain ammount of 'cheese') intelligent manner (I'm referring to the tow-in vs. paddle-in debate).Suspend certain of your critical faculties, accept the 'cheese' and enjoy the spectacle of professional surfers trying to act, while doing what few mortal actors could ever do! Non-surfers please note that the lead roles are actually played by pro-surfers, and they don't do too bad a job either (of acting! Their surfing's not bad either!)
