5.0 out of 5 stars Heartrending but accurate depiction of the real India, 14 Sep 2001
Amazing. This is just one in the series of Deepa Mehta's films (Fire and Earth out so far, Wind and Watera are expected). This film really touches you with the charming simplicity of the characters and their realistic trails and tribulations. Set in India, it wreaked havoc in theatres when it was screened there, being accused of being "too contraversial and against Hindu beliefs". Brilliant - EVERYONE should see it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeper than surfaces, 2 Dec 2003
'Fire' has sometimes been accused of suggesting women are only lesbian because they lack a good man - not so.
The film examines choices or the lack of them - the following of familiar patterns and perhaps questions whether we have choices at all.
If that sounds arty, please do not be put off.
This film is excellent - well shot and well crafted with fine performances from the two leading ladies - particularly Shabana Azmi.
As a lesbian myself I find it difficult to view this film as politically incorrect.
It is a beautiful film and well worth watching regardless of the viewer's sexuality. Love between two women is one element to this film and not its entire content.
Mehta is a fine writer/director and her work is worth following.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff......, 27 Sep 2003
By A Customer
I only watched this film because of the controversy it generated on release, but I have to say it was GREAT!!

The film is a bit un-PC because it gives the impression that the two female protagonists turn to each other only becasuse their husbands are not interested in them. I.e 'no one would be a lesbian if they only had a good man to see to them.' The film adds nothing to the struggle of women who are that way inclined to start with!!

That notwithstanding, it's a brave, ground-breaking effort. Mundu the treacherous buffoonish servant is a bit of an archetype, but he gives the film some much needed comic effect.

The scene where Sita returns Jatin's slap will probably prove as seminal in Indian film as did Sidney Poitier's similar slap-return involving a white plantation owner in In The Heat Of The Night. The oppressed finally see fit to strike back and not just take oppression on the chin.

A critic could complain and say that this is not an authentic Indian film, in that everyone speaks English except for a few minor characters. I daresay this was done to get it widespread international acceptability.

Well, that's it. I'd give it 3.75 stars myself, but don't want to spoil the record so far, so I'll go with FIVE!!!!
