I only watched this film because of the controversy it generated on release, but I have to say it was GREAT!!The film is a bit un-PC because it gives the impression that the two female protagonists turn to each other only becasuse their husbands are not interested in them. I.e 'no one would be a lesbian if they only had a good man to see to them.' The film adds nothing to the struggle of women who are that way inclined to start with!! That notwithstanding, it's a brave, ground-breaking effort. Mundu the treacherous buffoonish servant is a bit of an archetype, but he gives the film some much needed comic effect. The scene where Sita returns Jatin's slap will probably prove as seminal in Indian film as did Sidney Poitier's similar slap-return involving a white plantation owner in In The Heat Of The Night. The oppressed finally see fit to strike back and not just take oppression on the chin. A critic could complain and say that this is not an authentic Indian film, in that everyone speaks English except for a few minor characters. I daresay this was done to get it widespread international acceptability. Well, that's it. I'd give it 3.75 stars myself, but don't want to spoil the record so far, so I'll go with FIVE!!!!
