Amazon.co.uk Review
Oliver Stone used such words as "liberating" and "fun" to talk about U-Turn's relatively quick production schedule of 42 days. Stone's ideas of film fun, however, are something older generations would call sick. This film is a Southwestern noir tale about Bobby Cooper (Sean Penn), a hotshot who is stuck in the tight confines of Superior, Arizona, when his car breaks down. His subsequent adventure is a meatball comedy--loud, obnoxious and violent, and stuffed with diffused light, a hot cast and a no-fat Ennio Morricone score. This film has plenty of odd characters but you never really find out much about them. Bobby's first encounters include a repulsive mechanic (Billy Bob Thornton under the grease) and a blind Indian (Jon Voight under the makeup). Then there's Grace McKenna (a sizzling Jennifer Lopez), who is as dangerous as the curves of her red sundress. Bobby's got time to kill and Grace seems more than willing. Unfortunately, it seems that Bobby has never seen a movie such as A Touch of Evil; if he had, he would know it can only get worse. About the time Grace's husband, Jake (Nick Nolte), shows up, Bobby is knee-deep in murder plots and double-crosses.

The first 40 minutes or so are "fun" to a point. Penn is the perfect near-creep to root for and as he wanders back into town after meeting Grace, the eclectic characters pile up. But soon it gets monotonous, tiring and just plain ugly. And when incest and bloody fights begin, the fun is gone. If Penn wasn't so solid an actor and able to be empathetic in the most morose situations, the movie would be unwatchable in stretches. Lopez makes another good impression but this is not a performance that stands out. Nolte, raspy and ill-looking, is the Lee Marvin of the 90s. Before U-Turn is over, you are already wondering if Oliver Stone will do something else, something more important, soon. --Doug Thomas

4.0 out of 5 stars A dark surreal mood piece, 26 Oct 2002
This review is from: U-Turn [DVD] [1998] (DVD)
If you watch this, then don't expect the normal sort of Oliver Stone movie. This is quite different to his usual projects. This film is more of a mood piece than a story, and at times can be painful and difficult to watch, but believe me, it is worth sticking with.

Sean Penn is on top-form and plays the part brilliantly. Everything you see happens within about a 24-hour time scale, and it's about a guy who lands himself in a small Mexican town after his car breaks down, and everything goes wrong for him. And I mean everything. Sean Penn is realistic as an almost normal guy who eventually loses his mind in this town full of bad luck. One of the big questions the film poses is whether we are truly guilty of anything, or just victims to circumstances. The moral deterioration of Sean Penn's character under desperate circumstances is done in such a way that the audience can feel his desperation and support his immoral actions, that vary from violence to extreme lust, all the way to the climactic finale.

Jennifer Lopez is a brilliant actress and this film proves that, she's truly at her best in this film. Among the supporting cast are lots of well-known names and each does a brilliant job on building their characters and take part like true actors. Nick Nolte is disturbingly convincing, Joaquin Phoenix is great, as is Billy Bob Thornton, and so is Jon Voight. The atmosphere and style of the film are tweaked to just right level and the innovative camera work s used to the right amount. The twists at the end are excellent without being implausible or pretentious and will stay in your head for days. It might have its rough spots that occasionally get slightly dull, but overall, this brutal, violent sizzler will really make you feel like you're in this weird Mexican town yourself. Original, stylish, and disturbing, 'U Turn' succeeds at what it tries to do

5.0 out of 5 stars So many twists and turns, its great!, 14 Mar 2000
By stef_nz@hotmail.com (Asheridge, Bucks) - See all my reviews
An Oliver Stone special. The film is great set in a small town in a desert everything that can go wrong for Bobby Cooper played by Sean Penn does go wrong. The film does drift off a little and you can get lost in the never ending plot twist but you expect that form Oliver Stone. A long list of great actors makes this film one to add to your collection so you can see it over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Noir in Colour (& filters), 10 Nov 2008

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Stone used such words as "liberating" and "fun" to talk about U Turn's relatively quick production schedule of 50 days. Oliver Stone crawls through Quentin Tarentino's home turf here in this grat 1988 movie. It is as black and violent as a film can be, sort of Pulp Fiction meets Reservoir Dogs in the heat. Brilliant casting makes U Turn sizzle like roadkill on an Arizona blacktop. Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Bob Thornton, and Nick Nolte, John Voight dig right to the heart of human darkness, and then some.....

Surely many viewers will find the level of violence (Nick Nolte - "Let him watch") and the completely depraved characters unappealing at best--my ex-girlfriend walked away less than halfway through this classic 1988 movie. Did i mention the fat cow is my ex??

Anyhoo, I was riveted by the story, the characters, the action, and the stylistic approach Stone takes, with heavy use of filters and quick cuts to ravens, bleached skulls, setting suns, old photographs, and the like. That approach and the eerie score by Ennio Morricone also reminded me that the old Italian gypsy is still alive and working on soundtracks. Brilliant.
