Amazon.co.uk Review

Although it received mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike when released in 1998, this supernatural thriller benefits from a sustained atmosphere of anticipation and dread, and its combination of detective mystery and demonic mischief is handled with ample style and intelligence. Under the direction of Gregory Hoblit (who fared better with Primal Fear), Denzel Washington plays detective John Hobbes, who witnesses the gas-chamber execution of a serial killer (Elias Koteas). But when another series of murders begins, Hobbes suspects that the killer's evil spirit has survived and is possessing the bodies of others to do its evil bidding. Even Hobbes's trusted partner (John Goodman) thinks the detective is losing his grip on reality, but the dire warnings of a noted linguist (Embeth Davidtz) confirm Hobbes's far-out theory, and his case intensifies toward a fateful showdown.

Although its idea is better than its execution, and the story's film noir ambitions are never fully accomplished, this slickly directed thriller has some genuinely effective moments in which evil forces are entwined into the fabric of everyday reality. Among the highlights is a memorable scene in which Detective Hobbes must track the killer as the evil spirit is transferred between many people via physical contact. Even if the film is ultimately less than the sum of its parts, it's an intriguing hybrid that resides in the same cinematic neighbourhood as Seven and The Silence of the Lambs with a cast that also includes Donald Sutherland and James Gandolfini. Included on the DVD is a full-length audio commentary by director Hoblit, screenwriter Nicholas Kazan and producer Charles Roven. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding psychological thriller..., 29 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Fallen is a dark supernatural thriller that is definitely worth watching. The plot is very clever, beautifully constructed and acted, with a superbly thought-provoking ending. Denzel Washington does a really good job as the homicide detective Hobbes being chased by the fallen angel, Azazel. Excellent support is provided by John Goodman as his partner. The film is genuinely creepy in places and Azazel's transference from person to person produces some really good scenes.
Overall, this movie was excellent, thanks to the superb acting from all the cast, and the great direction of the film. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slowburning Modern Classic, 1 Aug 2004
By John Harrington (Hereford, England) - See all my reviews
This stylish and extremely well crafted film is one of the most underated movies ever.It has it all, with subtle and realistic performances from an excellent blend of actors including Denzel Washington, a thoughtful John Goodman and the ever unfathomable Donald Sutherland.
It also has a real sense of suspense and tension, and a very nice and very cleverly angled take on the well trod path of the supernatural.

Washington is sublime as Detective John Hobbes, paired with a superb Goodman(don't think Roseanne because he's just in a different world here),who thinks he's seen the last of a serial killer when he witnesses his execution, but who realizes slowly that somehow the spirit of the deceased lives on. As copycat murders begin, slowly drawing Hobbes into an epic but essentially private battle of Evil and Good, it dawns on him that he isn't fighting any ordinary being, but rather an almost immortal devil whose world weary attention Hobbes has unfortunately pricked!

The film's pace is deliberately steady but never, never lets up as it gradually winds it way on to it's conclusion, where we have the final and best twist of this laconic classic.
I can't recommend this movie highly enough, it is such a jewel amongst all the crud that's followed since Seven. In fact it stands on it's own without comparison to any other film, set amongst the broody backdrop of an industrial Northern Usa city, as one of the best most beautifully wrought movies of our time.

Get it and enjoy it again and again. These rare well made and engrossing performances are the stuff Oscars should be made of, not overbites and false noses! Sail on Fallen - Time is most definitely on your side!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Beware my wrath", 29 Jun 2004
Being a rabid atheist, I expected a movie about Fallen Angels to be somewhat feeble or perhaps, a little stupid. My cynicism was totally misguided. This is in my opinion, a brilliantly understated masterpiece of a film.

There are no Buffy-esque, rubber-mask-wearing, Kung Fu-kicking Demons here. Just a great script, played with reserve and style by a refreshingly (and brilliantly) talented cast.

Homicide Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) has bought a particularly nasty serial killer to justice (for a little while at least). Trouble is, now that he's been executed, the bodies are still piling up in what appears to be, a spate of copycat killings. Hobbes' thinks that he can simply use his powers of reason and his cliched cop-instincts to get to the bottom of it. But, he's going to need a lot more cunning to catch this ethereal nightmare.

What made this film for me was the very tangible presence of fear created by the malevolent 'Azazel'. You can almost feel his loathing for mankind as he flits from one random person to another, destroying their lives without remorse or pity. This adds to the creepy nature of the story, you're never sure who to trust; who is in control and who is being controlled?

I also liked the way we see Hobbes fumble around, with increasing desperation, trying to make the pieces fit, only to be dumbfounded at every step of the way. Well, almost every step. His ultimate, heroic act makes for a genuinely excellent final twist.

Some people define this as a Horror Movie but, to me it's more of a Thriller with a dark-fantasy theme (Think, Ridley Scott's 'Alien' as opposed to Romero's 'Dawn Of The Dead')
You'll be on the edge of your seat (but not necessarily hiding behind a cushion)

It's definitely the creepiest movie i've ever seen. I've seen it several times and it still makes me twitch! I guarantee your skin will crawl!
