Amazon.co.uk Review
Lucky for Eddie Murphy he got hold of the rights to this 1963 Jerry Lewis classic before Jim Carrey did. Murphy had a comeback of sorts with his Jeckyll-and-Hyde-derived fable of awkward chemistry professor Sherman Klump (Murphy), who discovers a potion that transforms him into the suave, cocky lady-killer Buddy Love (also Murphy). The big difference between the two versions is that Murphy's Sherman is not only a nerdy intellectual but is also grossly obese, which provides the opportunity for some hilarious digital transformation effects, as well as some gentle satire of our culture's attitudes toward fat people. As he did in the hit Coming to America, Murphy plays multiple roles, and the scenes at the Klump family dinner table, in which he plays everybody, are brilliantly funny. (Murphy won the National Society of Film Critics' award for best actor of 1996 for these performances.) Lewis based his Buddy Love on the 1960s ideal of cool exemplified by Sinatra and the Rat Pack; Murphy stumbles a bit by playing up the oily phoniness of his latter-day Love a little too soon, but for the most part The Nutty Professor represents a welcome return to form for Eddie Murphy. --Jim Emerson

4.0 out of 5 stars Eddie Murphy playing his own mother?, 14 Mar 2000
By stef_nz@hotmail.com (Asheridge, Bucks) - See all my reviews
A remake of the 1960's film starring Jerry Lewis. Eddie Murphy plays Professor Klump an obese Professor who discovers how to make himself thin. Unfortunately his thin personality is an absolute chauvinist. Murphy plays The professor, his thin self Buddy Love, his Father, his brother, his mother and his grandmother. Great make up work, great comedy and some completely vulgar family dining scenes make this an entertaining film.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good story, but bad content, 28 Nov 2005
Eddie Murphy was funny as Donkey in 'Shrek' but I'm afraid this thing didn't make the grade.
I've seen both 'Nutty Professor' movies and I strongly feel that the Jerry Lewis version was better. That's saying something, because that wasn't especially brilliant.

An inadequate bloke trying to get the girl and the simple Jeckyl/Hyde concepts all make good sense, taken together. There are some very funny bits in the movie. However, it is seriously let down by the bad language, the constant innuendo and references to certain parts of the anatomy. I was watching the counter and fervently waiting for the end before half an hour was past.

Sorry, Eddie. I cannot recommend this. Please, stick to playing a Donkey!

4.0 out of 5 stars The nutty professor, 5 Nov 2004
By nikki louise willacy (Thornton, England) - See all my reviews
Imagine you are a teacher wants a boyfriend or girlfriend, but can`t get one! All your family is a bit on the big side, but they won`t loose any weight? Thats exactly what the professor is like! His life is a bad, bad dream!
Every time the professor walks down the street he gets looked at and laught at. But then this really fit women walks into your class saying that she is working next door, and then you ask her for a meal. But it goes terribly wrong!
This film is a funny and sad film for all the family to watch! It`s absolutly great!!

1.0 out of 5 stars I'd rather be watching paint dry.
This film, possibly the worst I have ever seen, should not even merit a review. However I feel a moral obligation to write one to prevent innocent human beings from having to sit... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny reworking of 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'
An excellent film. Sometimes I think there are unnesessary sexual references, and that's why the film didn't get the extra star. But on the whole, a movie worth paying for. Read more
