Synopsis
Based on the popular video game, this action-packed adventure pits Colonel William Guile (Van Damme), the Allied Nations commando leader, against the diabolical General Bison (Raul Julia). Ryu, Chun-Li, Sagat, and other combatants from the popular video game "Street Fighter II" come to life in all their kickboxing glory. Gen. Bison, the villainous ruler of Shadaloo, is holding over 60 relief workers hostage. When the Allied Nations forces, led by handsome redhead Col. Guile, decide to pay Bison a ransom instead of overthrowing him, Guile objects, and is fired. Never one to take things lightly, Guile rounds up a multi-cultural band of expert "street fighters", including Kylie Minogue's Officer Cammy, and sets out to defeat the nefarious Bison. A high-kicking, futuristic, martial arts battle for the fate of the Earth, Raul Julia's final performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as it's said to be., 24 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Alright you aren't gonna get Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This movie is big and dumb. It is a Van Damme movie after all. If you're a fan of the games you'll recognise the characters but the storyline has been hacked to peices to suit a movie going audience. It does the job. The fight scenes are well done and the acting is functional at best but it is just a movie and it's a fun way to spend an hour and a half. Don't expect too much and you'll be entertained from start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good film, loosely based on the popular video game., 21 Nov 2001
Street Fighter is a good film, which is only let down by a few minor niggles.

Fans of the game a most likely to be dissapointed as the script does not strictly follow the storyline from the game. Several character have changed their morality and it appears that the producers didn't like the whole 'World Warrior' theme.

If you own the video, the DVD features will not really make this film worth buying again. Kylie Minogue outshines the rest of the cast's performance with the exception of Raul Julia for which it is worth-while to note, for his fans, that this was his last film before he died.

The film is much better judged as being a family action film, its suitable for all ages. The fight scenes are well staged and the story is imaginative but at the same time fairly simple, so it should keep most people interested.

1.0 out of 5 stars An Insult to Street Fighter, 29 Jun 2007
This review is from: Street Fighter [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
I you were a movie director and you decided to make a Street fighter movie. What would you do? Would you:
(a) Pack it full of action, use little story, use characters appropiately and aim the movie at the teens that play the game. The characters from the game and the tournament involved could be used as reaseon to deliver the best form of brutality and violence, in relation to the game.
OR
(b) Would you thro in a rediculous story, tarnish every character in the game and present us with some of the most bog standed action sequences imaginable.
Well, if you chose (a), you'd be like me, wondering where everything went wrong. As an everyday movie it would still be dreadful, but probably have more dignity. But it's the way the Street Fight legacy is used so cheaply that leaves a sick feeling in my throat. Take Ken and Ryu, the biggest names in the game. They're two teenagers here who are RUBBIsh at fighting. What about Sagat? You know, the hard as nails, cold as ice, "perfect for ultimate Movie big bad guy" kickboxer? He's BARELY even present here. And along with Ken, Ryu, Vega, (where the hell was Bullrog?!) and everyone else in the game look like a cast for a cirus or carnival. And for one last kick in the balls, Van Damme plays the ALL AMERICAN Guile. Of course, the Americans WOULD save the day (sigh) but when it's being played by a European it DOESN'T WORK!!!! Every representation here is so bad, from the dreadful Guile, to the virtual non-existance of main character Chunli, Ryu, Ken, Vega and Sagat, to the laughable M.Bison. Give this a miss.

And I LIKE Van Damme.
