Amazon.co.uk Review

This second TV movie spin-off from the cult sci-fi series Babylon 5 occurs sometime shortly after the end of the Shadow War. On patrol in hyperspace Commander Ivanova (Claudia Christian) discovers a most peculiar object, and decides to have it investigated at the station. The fly in the ointment is an overly eager "aide" from IPX (Interplanetary Expeditions) who insists on assisting the research. The motivations of IPX clearly aren't pure, and there's something else going on in their interest toward telepath Lyta Alexander (Patricia Tallman). Before you can say "it's behind you", spooky things start happening, with crewmembers dreaming of an alien world and a small cult rising in worship of the object. The whole idea of this standalone tale is that of a haunted house in space. Lighting and design contribute to a claustrophobic atmosphere, and the soundtrack by regular series composer (and ex-Tangerine Dream member) Christopher Franke is suitably eerie, making use of the Theremin, an early electronic instrument much used in 1950s B-movies. Since it falls outside of the arc of the series' continuing storyline, Thirdspace is basically a good excuse for a Halloween Special. --Paul Tonks

Synopsis

2.0 out of 5 stars Depressingly bad, 29 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I am a great fan of B5, having watched all the episodes many times. The overall arc was an excellent idea, and, despite potential funding problems JMS managed to pull it off quite well. I saw "In the Beginning" soon after it had come out in the UK, and was greatly impressed by the details that were added to the overall storyline of B5, including some explanations about the war, which is only really ever hinted at in the series. Then I watched Thirdspace... some of the effects were, well, quite bad, to be honest, and despite the overall concept being reasonable, the plot was weak. For instance, take the "Oh, we'll nuke it" attitude! I'm not sure whether the actors were rushed in making this, but they seemed less happy with things, adding to the amateurish feel.

I think that one of the problems was that whilst ITB works in and around the main arc, Thirdspace just works as a long episode. In as much as that, it is fine, not that much worse than a particularily bad episodes (of which there are a number). But then again, there are some cracking double episodes or mini groups (like "Babylon Squared" and "War Without End I/II") which not only have great plots, but futher the main story.

If you are a B5 fan, I'd recommend you go for ITB. Only get Thirdspace if you must have a complete set of videos. If you are looking into B5, don't get this video...

5.0 out of 5 stars Babylon 5-Thirdspace, 10 Feb 2006
well first off im a huge B5 fan! have every film and episode, so have good idea whats a good episode and whats not. Thirdspace is more of a long episode rather than a movie but in my opinion its pritty damn good. Got most members of the original cast including a violent Vir Coto( if thats how u spell his name). If your new to B5 its a good episode to watch. overall worth every penny, good quality edition to the B5 Saga.
