Amazon.co.uk Review

There's a kind of perverse marketing genius at work in this cheesy sci-fi hit from 1995 in which scientists create a half-human, half-alien woman named Sil (Natasha Henstridge) who's capable of morphing from a slimy, tentacled creature into a blonde babe with the body of a Playboy centrefold. This makes it easy for Sil to lure gullible guys who are only too willing to indulge her voracious mating urge, realising too late that sex with Sil is anything but safe. As the body count rises, a handpicked team of specialists tracks the alien's killing spree, but their diverse expertise is barely a match for the ever-morphing Sil. Borrowing elements of the Alien movies (including bizarre alien designs by Swedish artist HR Giger) and spicing them up with some tantalising nudity, Species is a wet dream for creature-feature fans--kind of like watching a sci-fi vampire fantasy while browsing through the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

1.0 out of 5 stars Not even good when watched drunk, 14 Mar 2004

Awful film.

This is supposed to be exploring what would happen if Alien and Human DNA was mixed. Yeah...

The cast is at best, talentless. The Hybrid is played by Natasha "I'll get them out to further my film career" Hetsbridge (?), who copulates with any male she fancies in order to have offspring. Her quest is hampered by a group of specilaists selected to erase her - a molecular biologist (who spends more time with a gun in her hand than using her skills), an assassin (british, couldn't kill a woodlouse with a spade) and an empath (melodramatic cliche black-guy-in-horror movie).

The first problem is the characters don't question the fact they're are hunting an alien, that aliens have contacted humans or even that there's an empath amoungst them. The second is the storyline is so obvious and painful to follow that i found myself flicking other channels to amuse myself. Thirdly the effects are poor and overused, there's too much unneeded sx and gore and generally this movie has been made for the sake of it. Don't watch this, do something more constructive, like count clouds.

3.0 out of 5 stars Two and a half minutes of entertainment., 9 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This promised to be a great film, excellent cast, and with the talents of the master himself, HR. Giger (designer of Alien) creating the female creature, half human half alien DNA it looked like this film had a lot going for it. But, yes you guessed it, with average special effects this was let down. It's only worth watchig for two things. Natasha Hensttidge, and two and a half minutes that you see of the alien, the bits they spent the money on. My advice is buy John Carpenters The Thing. Be entertained.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sub-Alien, 15 Mar 2000
By Ben Elliss (Reading, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Species [VHS] [1995] (VHS Tape)
The producers of this film probably used the formula "Scary alien + Sexy blonde babe = Success", but it doesn't work out quite like that in 'Species'. The undeniably attractive Natasha Henstridge takes the part of Sil, an alien being who generally takes human form, but occasionally shows her true alien appearance. Her mission in life is to find a human mate, so we are supplied with several sex scenes that end in the surprising and unfortunate demise of the male participant. The males of this film are what let it down, unfortunately - even though Michael Madsen, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina have all proved their worth in much better films than this, they get appalling parts in 'Species'. The main thing this film has going for it is the intricate creature design for Sil herself - devised by HR Giger, who dreamt up the disturbing imagery behind the 'Alien' series.

2.0 out of 5 stars oh dear...
Really dreadful formulaic nonsense, with barely a shred of originality. Poor acting, screenplay, dialogue... made for tv feel... steer clear of this if you didn't already know.
