Amazon.co.uk Review
1995 had already seen the box-office success of sword-wielding heroes in Rob Roy and Braveheart when along came this glossy revision of the Arthurian legend, in which Lady Guinevere (Julia Ormond) is torn between her love for the noble King Arthur (Sean Connery) and the passionate knight Sir Lancelot (Richard Gere). As the story opens, Guinevere's lands are under attack by the evil knight Malagant (Ben Cross), and she must choose between marriage to Arthur and the security of Camelot, or encouraging the affections of Lancelot, who has heroically rescued her from a potentially lethal attack. Anyone looking for meticulous medieval authenticity won't find it here, but director Jerry Zucker (Ghost) keeps the action moving with exuberant spirit and glorious production values. Even if you don't completely believe Richard Gere as a somewhat too-contemporary Lancelot, the performances of Ormond and especially Connery are effortlessly appealing. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value for money, 27 Mar 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: First Knight [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
This film is good for a number of reasons.

First, it has Sean Connery playing King Arthur.

Second, the script hasn't done what has been done 1000 times before with this story, but has taken a new, fresh perspective.

Third, it doesn't pretend to be a classic film, or to try and teach anything. It's just an entertaining piece of cinema that you can watch, enjoy, and not be affected by. Sometimes you just need a film like that.

My advice to anyone looking for an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours is to have a look at this. The price is right, and it's great fun.

This version of the King Arthur legend is indeed glossy; Sean Connery is suitably handsome and grave as the king, and Julia Ormond is appropriately majestic and serene as Lady Guinevere. Unfortunately, Richard Gere is his usual smarmy self as Sir Lancelot, and the film lacks bite as he is just too unlikely as an old-fashioned hero. Overall this is fun - as long as you don't take it too seriously - and miles better than the dour and frankly dull 'King Arthur' released a decade later.

5.0 out of 5 stars One word, Brilliant, 3 Sep 2001
By A Customer
What can i say? I love this movie! I'm a real sucker for Historic films: Braveheart, Elizabeth, Joan of Arc, but this one is my all time favouite! It wasn't really your usual braveheart really bloody historic movie. It has a bit of everything, romance, action, tragedy. I prefered this in films. The cast were prefect for their parts, especially Sean Connery as King Arthur, he portrayed it brilliantly. My favourite scene is the Gauntlet and if like me like a bit of action and adventure witha lil touch of romance, then this film is for you. I cant say this film is for everybody but if you are a real film lover and a lover of historic films, then this film is for you! Go on, buy it!
