3.0 out of 5 stars Franchise starting to wear thin., 9 Dec 2000
By Ross Molyneux (Durham City, Durham United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The third installment of the Bloodsport series sticks with the cast of the second one with Daniel Bernhardt again taking up his role as the high-kicking Alex Cardo. Unlike the two previous Bloodsports the film is set in a flashback told by Alex whilst on a camping awayday with his young son who he is also teaching martial arts to. Punctuated by switches between past and present Cardo tells his son about the death of his trainer from the second one by a group organising the next Kumite. Out for revenge Alex enters the competition to avenge his master. The usual ingredients are here with a multitude of martial arts represented and stunts and fighting the main basis rather than the acting. Again there is the final fight with the almost invincible opponent who is eventually overcome by the hero. The final fight in this film is outstanding with an absolute beast of a fighter from one of the Russian states who has pounded and even killed contestants up to this stage. Overall the film is good from a martial arts point of view but is spoilt by all the father-son sentimentality which seems to break up the good bits just as they get going.

bloodsport 1 is a classic im trying to buy on dvd i havent seen two but i dont think it will live up to no1.like many martial arts fans i am a black belt in aikido and also karate.so this is why bloodsport appeals so much to me.in this film frank dux an army officer decides to honour his teacher and fight in the kumite its a great movie for martial art fans and there his plenty of great one liners and action scences.Right im off to continue my search for this great film on dvd.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST TWO, BUT STILL DELIVERS, 7 Aug 2007

You should watch Bloodsport III if you have enjoyed the first two, but know that it is inferior to those movies.

First of all, the narration style is the same as in the second one(told by flash-backs). This is not bad, but it doesn't bring anything new to the franchise, and the between flash-back scenes in B2 were arguably better. Secondly, the main villain (who somehow looks like Vince Vaughn). His name is "The Beast"...OK, the name of the bad guy in B2 was "Demon", so does every bad guy now have to have a weird name like "Evil Guy" or whatever? Also, and more importantly, he really isn't that impressive, and doesn't look like he poses a threat to the hero. Finally, all the other Kumite fighters sucked. Some of them had funny names (Lima Lama, JJ Tucker), but none of them were sympathetic, rather super annoying (except for Lima Lama).

Now for the good. The movie was a shot in Sri Lanka, which makes for an interesting change of locale. A lot of the team behind B2 is back for this one, and it's nice to see actors like Pat Morita and James Hong don't mind coming back for just one scene. It's also nice to see actors like John-Rhys Davies, who played Sallah in Indiana Jones, and Gimli in Lord Of The Rings, will also act in movies like Bloodsport. Also, and importantly, though handled somewhat awkwardly, the underlying storyline in B3 is deeper and has more meaning than all the other Bloodsports.

All in all, while inferior to it's predecessors, Bloodsport III is a movie for which one should not have high expectations, and with Daniel Bernhardt in the lead, it delivers it's promise.
