Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It seemed like a pretty good career move, and for the most part it was. Demi Moore will never top any rational list of great actresses, but as her career stalled in the mid-1990s she had enough internal fire and external physicality to be just right for her title role in G.I. Jane. Her character's name isn't Jane--it's Jordan O'Neil--but the fact that she lacks a penis makes her an immediate standout in her elite training squad of Navy SEALs. She's been recruited as the first female SEAL trainee through a series of backroom political manoeuvres, and must prove her military staying power against formidable odds--not the least of which is the abuse of a tyrannical master chief (Viggo Mortensen) who puts her through hell to improve her chances of success. Within the limitations of a glossy star vehicle, director Ridley Scott manages to incorporate the women-in-military issue with considerable impact, and Moore--along with her conspicuous breast enhancements and that memorable head-shaving scene--jumps into the role with everything she's got. Not a great movie by any means, but definitely a rousing crowd pleaser, and it's worth watching just to hear Moore shout the words "Suck my dick!" --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Rainy Day Movie - Not just for us chicks!, 23 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: G.I. Jane [DVD] [1997] (DVD)
It isn't an absolutely fantastic movie, but who cares? And it's not really any sort of important statement on sexual politics and equality. Fair enough, it got a trashing at the box office, but i think that's because everyone assumed it was some sort of deranged feminist rant. But it's not... it's just good fun. It's a movie that has you rooting for Moore whether you want to or not, and you feel great when she manages to turn things around, and absolutely gutted when things are going wrong. It's a great ending too. It's maybe a bit predictable and 'gung-ho' and very 'U.S.A.A.O.K.', but that's the whole point - it doesn't have to be high brow and meaningful. I would definetly recommend it - watch it, and take it for what it is, and enjoy it... and I guarantee that you'll watch it again, and again! Because I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent action packed film, 10 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I thoughully enjoyed this film. Its about a woman that achieves something that has never been achieved before. Shes the first woman to participate in the Navy. She joins the S.E.A.L.S and goes through some very tough and intense training. She must stuggle to overcome a physically gruelling schedule, constant harassment, and sabotage but knows the future of women in the military depends on her success. She shows alot of character and determination and is eventually rewarded for her effort. This is an action packed military adventure film with abit of romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as critics said!, 5 May 2004
This review is from: G.I. Jane [DVD] [1997] (DVD)
Quite often when critics wrote a movie is bad, crap, silly, terrible or whatever, the reality is different. This movie is no exception. I quite enjoy to watch this movie, it has a bit of action, drama and politics, even though it's full of American patriotism. The major downside, though, is Demi Moore. In this movie, she turned like sort of 'man' with her bald head, hard muscles and remark 'Suck my ----!'. I guess people expect her to keep her feminity, stays strong during her SEAL training and succeeded at the end. She just doesn't relate to her female audiences. Overall, it is not an instant classic, but entertaining enough to keep me happy. I think Ridley Scott learnt his lesson and made 'Gladiator' as his next project.
