Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Looking for Richard, a strange and charming documentary by Al Pacino in which he also stars, is an exploration of several topics: Shakespeare and his humpbacked villain, the impulse to act, the way actors work--and Pacino's single-minded effort to make the Bard accessible to all audiences and not just the effete few. Over the course of the film, Pacino alternately discusses the role and the text, roams Manhattan talking about Shakespeare with everyone from scholars to street people and re-creates scenes from the play in a production staged at the Cloisters, an evocative castle-like museum on the north end of Manhattan. He assembles a cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Winona Ryder, Estelle Parsons and Alec Baldwin to perform the scenes, slipping back and forth between text and discussion of the play in a way that makes Shakespeare comprehensible and fascinating to viewers who know or care nothing about his writing. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Witty and wise, 2 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Al Pacino's take on the Bard's Richard III is a refreshing one. For those for whom the language of Shakespeare seems alien and archaic it gently opens up the themes and politics of Richard III, and shows it to be a play remarkable for it's insight into the human condition and the politics of power.

Movie stars, pretentious hangers-on at New York arty parties, and scholary academics - all have their say. It's fun, witty and laid back, and leaves you with a renewed respect for Shakespeare's talent.

Pacino selflessy casts the stagelight on Shakespeare's genius, but he should take a bow for this witty and wise commentary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare explained., 31 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Al Paccino, is looking for Richard III. He is looking for a way to play the ambitious, deformed wannabe king from the famous shakespeare play. He goes through the play scene by scene attempting the context in which he is set and a way around the tricky language.

This is a great little documentary about an actor, a good actor attempting to approach a way to perform a certain part. It is fun and accessable partly because of Paccino's charm and the enthusiasm of his quest. A nice little video that shows that shakespeare has always been human feelings and emotions.

4.0 out of 5 stars A uniquely refreshing view of Shakespeare's Richard III, 3 Jan 2001
By NIGEL URQUHART (BEDFORD, BEDFORDSHIRE United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This film is an excellent introduction to people who have trouble following the works of Shakespeare and the "Olde" English language. Pacino and his band of players take time to explore the background and meaning of the play before performing each scene. It is supposed to explain why Americans in particular can't relate to the Bard's plays. It is presented in such a way that it will help all nationalities understand Richard III and hopefully encourage them to further develop an interest in the works of William Shakespeare.
