Amazon.co.uk Review

It's hard to know who thought it would be a good idea to make a live-action version of Disney's animated classic. The one bright notion anyone had was casting Glenn Close as Disney Übervillainess Cruella de Vil; her flashing eyes and angular features are a perfect match and do credit to what is one of the most indelible animated characters Disney has ever created. The story remains essentially the same, focusing on Cruella's plot to kidnap the puppies of a young married couple (Jeff Daniels and Jolie Richardson) and make them into a coat. But the dreaded John Hughes, who wrote this script, fills it with sadistic slapstick and far too few genuine laughs. The human actors work hard, but to little avail; thankfully, there's a posse of puppies to regularly steal scenes when the going gets dreary--although there are only so many laughs to be had from inappropriate dog puddles. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

Synopsis

Whilst the original Disney Classic continues to delight audiences the world over, this up-to-the minute version has 'Live Action' and loads of dogs, romance and all that is needed to keep the whole family howling.

4.0 out of 5 stars How strange..., 6 Aug 2009

Isn't odd that as I'm watching this film (and I do mean right this moment) for the very first time since its theatrical release, it's writer and producer John Hughes has died. It's full of Home-Alonesque criminal torment and awesome dogs. May he rest in peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Feel Good Film - whatever your age, 31 Dec 2000
By A Customer
101 Dalmatians kept both my mum and my two girls glued to the television throughout.

It is a fantastic feel good movie that will appeal to even the hardest of hearts whatever their age.

4.0 out of 5 stars 101 Dalmatians, 25 Jun 2006
By Dave Kraven (Burbage, UK) - See all my reviews

Thirty-six years later and Disney decides to update their 1960 animated classic with this enjoyably boisterous and surprisingly effective live-action feature with Glenn Close at her absolute evilest as Cruella De Vil who's on a quest to turn cute spotty dalmatian puppies into a nice fur-coat. Jeff Daniels and Joely Richardson are comfortable as the loving owners of Pongo and Perdita and their litter of 15 puppies but sadly, the live dogs lack the warm expressions - and the vocals - of their former counterparts. Other than that, it's still satisfying to watch, with its tremendous comedic sequences, Stephen Herek's commendable direction and of course, those adorable dogs.
