Next of Kin directed by Thorold Dickinson is an excellent film.
It may never of been shown had Winston Churchill not overturned his previous instruction to ban the film, he considered Next of Kin so true to life he was concerned that the already fragile morale of the British public could not take another blow like this. It shows brillantly how vital "Be like Dad, Keep Mum" was to any possible success the United Kingdom was to gain during WW2.The keeping mum message is made time after time during the film,the camera lingering slowly on propaganga posters,hammering home this vital message. The film depicts in graphic terms what happens when people do let slip vital information."Next of Kin" has an all star cast including Meryvn Johns,Thora Hird and Jack Hawkins. Two other stalwarts of the British Cinema, Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne make a wonderful camero appearance at the end of the film. Several were to be seen again when they appeared in another British WW2 classic "Went the Day Well. Mervyn John makes the most dramatic change from Nazi Spy in "Next of Kin" to telling the story in "Went the Day Well" of how the villagers in Bramley End fought the German Army to keep their homes from being invaded. Next of Kin is a dark story in parts, the battle scenes are well done and the cast believable. I feel it really gives today's audience an insight into what must of been horrific and soul destroying times.
