Product Description

Synopsis

Until the First World War, the estate gardens of Heligan ('The Willows' in Cornish) were one of Cornwall's glories, but after the Great War the Tremayne family abandoned them. They remained in a state of decay until Tim Smit, John Nelson and a dedicated team restored the gardens. They are now the most visited private gardens in Britain. This film follows twelve months in the gardening year and is taken from a six-part TV series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all interested in archaeology or gardening., 30 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This video is a fascinating insight into how the Lost Gardens of Heligan were found and restored. You meet the people who are responsible and you are shown how different parts of the gardens were restored together with footage of the garden before restoration was started - and what a difference they made! You don't need to have visted Heligan to be able to appreciate this, you just need to have a love for either archaeology or plants, or both! After seeing the video you will certainly want to visit, and also buy the next video, 'The Return To The Lost Gardens Of Heligan'. -- Dan Parsons

4.0 out of 5 stars The Power and The Passion., 22 Mar 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This VHS tape is long overdue release on DVD, and in doing so, preferably it will be a box set of the TV series rather then a 90 minute overview as is this. It's a fabulous story about the passion of two men in restoring the overgrown gardens, trees, ponds and streams to something resembling their former magnificent glory; and they succeeded admirably. The Eden Project has seen DVD release with Alan Titchmarsh narrating. 'Open All Hours' milklady and Robbie Coltrane's wife in 'Cracker,' Barbara Flynn, narrates here and makes a superb job of talking us through the amazing job these chaps took on and succeded in turning a jungle into the most visited garden in the UK.
