Have a break from the Mundane American Blockbusters and prepare to be absorbed by a film that carries you through on a journey of young girl (Vanessa Paradis) and her band of friends who enjoy Hustling along the way and making the most out of a bad lot.Beneath the Surface Marie has a passion to find her father and discover WHY,her mother died.You will never see a more sensational and shocking start to a film and if any mother can survive this horrific opening sequence,without shedding a tear,then it would be remarkable.Once involved in the plot of this film you will find it hard to leave as Marie finally finds her long long Father.What part did he play in her Mother`s death?How far can she push him in the search of the truth? Is he the devil in Disguise? You can judge for yourself.there are some amusing moments in the film as Marie and friends disrupt a wedding,Destroy a fat man`s Sexual prowess with jelly belly power and Marie gives her young male friend a present that most men can only dream of and the Underlying theme tune that in itself holds a secret to the film is wonderful.I found afterwards that everywhere i went,i could be found humming the Tune Elisa,Elisa,mush to the annoyance of anyone who knows me.A Strong cast including Miss Pretty Paradis,The Beautiful Clothilde Courau and that man again Mr Depardieu doing well,what Depardieu does adds to this film, A provacative film of revenge.My friends that have borrowed this from me have all commented on their total enjoyment of this film and Directed by Jean Becker,the man who gave us Adjani in One Deadly summer and Les Enfants Du Marais is a Seal of Quality in itself.Have a Touch of French art and culture for a change and if you dislike subtitles then do as i do watch sooooo many French films that you no longer need to look at them and enjoy French Cinema,THE BEST IN THE WORLD.

I initially saw this by accident on television, and was very glad I did. At the time I didn't know Paradis was doing any films and, thinking that she would be just another model turned actress, watched with interest. As it turned out I ended up loving the film. She managed Marie's dark side very well, and brought out her unique street-wise intelligence. The introduction of Gerard Depardieu on the scene was a surprise, and he was his usual self - playing the self loathing, long lost father with his characteristic ease. There were the occasional corny close ups and over-the-top moments, but I didn't mind them. The films off beat humour and smartness made me enjoy it all the more. And of course, Paradis is just beautiful. You can't but watch her! Solange and Ahmed were the perfect sidekicks, but I got the impression that they were played down to give way to Marie's story. However, that may have been wise, as too many 'painful beginnings' create a feeling of general confusion and reluctant pity on the part of the watcher. Overall, I'd recommend it. Eventhough I'm not at all a fan of foreign film, I think this is my one exception.
