Product Description

Synopsis

Michael Winterbottom's first theatrical feature is a wildly anarchic road movie in which two lesbians fall for each other while speeding through Northern England on a murder spree. Amanda Plummer stars as the exuberantly off-kilter Eunice and Saskia Reeves plays the obsessive Miriam, who falls under Eunice's peculiar spell when she stumbles into her gas station one unassuming afternoon looking for someone named Judith. Little does she realize that Eunice is a cold-blooded killer without any semblance of a conscience. By the time she does discover Eunice's predilection for murder, she's too head-over-heels in love with her to do the right thing and turn her in. Miriam becomes so obsessed with her new lover, that when she discovers a body in the trunk of Eunice's car, she insists they bury it quickly so that no one will find out. As they continue their journey to nowhere, Miriam delves into Eunice's tantalizing and reckless world of murder and begins to wonder if she can separate right from wrong herself. Winterbottom's off-kilter comedy features an electrifyingly insane performance from Plummer, and incorporates a soundtrack by tough girl bands that is a good compliment to the proceedings (PJ Harvey, Bjork, The Cranberries, etc.).

5.0 out of 5 stars a moving piece which both shocked and impressed me., 18 Sep 2001

dont let the 18 certificate give you any predetermined opinions of this film. although there is some more graphic sexual scenes involving the two women the film is about so much more. the running soundtrack by the cranberries is the most impressive thing about the film as each song has been placed at the most poigniant parts of the film bringing tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. the script is simple but long speeches are not needed as the scenes speak for themselves. i cant emphasise how touching the final scenes are where the love of these two women comes to a tragic consequence. no other film has left such a strong memory.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not easy, but worth watching, 26 Jul 2005

This is an almost unforgettable film, one for the crazy arty section of your collection, and one that probably won't appeal to all tastes - but it is worth seeing. Remarkable plot, characters and location. For me the most memorable thing is probably the cinematography - England's Lancashire plain is a bizarrely beautiful place of emptiness, and well known for being almost impossible to photograph.

Only misses out on five stars for being Difficult. File somewhere near Peter Greenaway and My Own Private Idaho.
