Amazon.co.uk Review

In yet another example of Demi Moore's astonishing narcissism, this appalling adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Great American Novel becomes a teary, talk-show-worthy story of a woman rediscovering the erotic, of interrupted love, of a brave-but-beleaguered heroine's personal struggle against male stupidity. Never mind that this has little to do with Hawthorne's magnificent, protofeminist book, which is a million times more relevant today than this film could ever be. Director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields) deserves to be horsewhipped for colluding with Moore's self-fascination, while Gary Oldman should be kicked in the pants for allowing the novel's main character to come off as an inconsequential ninny. Making matters worse, Robert Duvall can be seen ridiculously dancing with a deerskin on his head. If The Scarlet Letter were a joke, it would be a very bad joke. But it's not, and that's worse. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 19 Oct 2005
One of my favourite films, no matter how many bad or average reviews it gets. Beautifully filmed, great soundtrack, romantic, moving, and Gary Oldman plays the character very well. I was initially surprised when reading the book to see that at the end he dies, rather than riding off into the sunset with Hester, as they do in the film. But I love that the film used it's artistic license like that. Much more important things in life than sticking rigidly to a book - the film has a happy ending, and the film is an enjoyable and moving historical romance .... great!

5.0 out of 5 stars The whole film captures your heart, 12 Jan 2002

Gary Oldman really succeeds in the role of a love torn preacher. If you enjoyed Dracula then you will know what I am talking about. I havent read the book which in a way is a good thing because I have no expectations. Demi Moore is more than adequate in this movie and Robert Duvall adds a further diverse element. For a really good love torn romance, this movie will get you by the heart strings.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a great adaptation of the original novel, 2 Mar 2000
By A Customer
As a great fan of Nathaniel Hawthorne's original novel and also of Gary Oldman's acting, I awaited this film with some eagerness. In vain, it turned out. It is among the most awful movies I've ever wasted two hours watching. In this film version, the story is given a totally ridiculous happy ending, with the Reverend rescuing Hester Prynne on horseback and riding off into the sunset to live happily ever after with her! Hester is supposed to live out the rest of her days as an outcast! Terrible stuff. If you're looking for decent films set in the C17th / C18th United States, try 'The Crucible' or 'Sleepy Hollow'.
