Product Description

Amazon.com

This ambitious 1995 film by John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood ) doesn't quite succeed at painting the illuminating, collective portrait of college life in the '90s that the director seeks. But Singleton does do a fine job of defining some conflicting impulses for young people on the cusp of adulthood, particularly the desire to broaden horizons on the one hand and circle the wagons with like-minded allies on the other. Students in the film's Columbus University divide themselves along lines of race, sexual preferences, ideology, and, most dangerously, levels of paranoia. Among the fine cast is Michael Rapaport, who portrays a loner drawn to a local community of neo-Nazis. His resultant problems with the school's African-Americans takes over the story at the expense of other, parallel dramas, but Singleton's insights into race hatred on campus--a microcosm of the surrounding culture--is not to be dismissed. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting racial and social observations, 26 Mar 2003
This review is from: Higher Learning [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
This film was made by american director John Singleton who also made the remake of Shaft and the forthcoming sequel to Fast And The Furious. It's based around a college campus and the different groups within it all trying to get on but held back by their racial and social hang-ups. a young and naive student (Michael Rappaport)from the south who has no friends and struggles to settle in is be-friended by the local nazi group and is then on the slippery slope to self destruction. A young black athlete (Omar Epps)who's only able to afford college because of his athletics scholarship struggles with his school work and the pressure of keeping his athletics form.He gets frustrated by the system and the confinements in which he has to work in and be-friends the local black activists (Ice Cube,Busta Rhymes) and starts to see things differently. Throw in a young girl (Jennifer Connelly) who see's everything through rose tinted glasses, but after an horrible early experience learns things are not always as nice and as peaceful as she would like and you get an excellent social drama which brings all these stories together for an exciting but tragic ending. The standard of acting is excellent throughout, watch out for a small role for laurence fisburne (Matrix's Morpheus)as the wise teacher.I Highly recommend this film,it's one which you will recommend to all your friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars UP THERE WITH THE BEST, 14 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This film is amazing, it tackles loads of issues that needed to be addressed in a teenage light such as rape facism and racism. The film follows three students through their freshman year in university and gives us an incite into their individual group beliefs and activities. If you like films about racism and how it affects people this film is the one for you. Oh yeah the sound track is rad aswell.
