5.0 out of 5 stars A spell-binding three-cornered duel., 18 Mar 2000
By Alice Lane (London UK) - See all my reviews
One of the best films I've ever seen. The story is set in France in the period just after the fall of Napoleon. Fanny Ardant and her husband are determined social climbers - aided by her immense wealth; but the money came from her deceased first husband, Colonel Chabert, and when a shabby, half-mad man (Gerard Depardieu) appears claiming to be Chabert, she'll stop at nothing to keep him quiet. The brilliant lawyer who acts as go-between (a dazzling performance from Fabrice Luchini)tries to resolve the conflict, and to find out if "Chabert" is really who he says he is. Don't expect a sprawling epic; this is a small, intense, beautifully acted movie which you won't forget.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing tragedy or tragicly disappointing, 13 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Depardieu brings all his talents to the part of Chabert. Sadly he is too often betrayed by his well-fed frame and beaming smile to be convincing.

The sets and costumes are perfect, and the character of Derville the lawyer is exeptionally well concieved and performed.

This is a tale of misfortune and misery, yet there was no display of tears, no fits of anger, no display of love.

The story is provocative, you are left wanting so much to know about the lead characters, but in the end you know nothing but their public facade.

If you want an entertaining movie give it a miss, if you are looking for something provocative then it is worth a watch.
