(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Martine Dugowson's 1993 film is a highly original work that focuses on two stong female characters (portrayed by Romane Bohringer & Elsa Zylberstein). It focuses on their friendship & estrangement over twenty-five years, which might make people think we are in Beaches/Me Without You/that duff film with Demi Moore & Rosie O'Donnell in territory. The film turns towards the end, and becomes a much darker piece- more into Bell Jar, Mishima style territory: self-destruction (there is a wonderful quote from Kafka, though which Kafka I cannot say, not having read everything so far- if anyone knows which work it stems from...).

It is an unusual film, perhaps a more oblique take on films like Wild Strawberries or Another Woman in showing alternate sides to a person lost to myth (though that's not to suggest it's a road movie)- the structure & approach are very original (I was also reminded a little of Lenny). Nice to see also the appearance of Jean-Phillipe Ecoffey, the French equivalent of Philip Seymour Hoffmann, who was so great in An Impudent Girl (1985) and also appeared with Bohringer in Portrait Chinois (1994) & L'appartment (1998). It would be nice to see American or British cinema make something that focuses on female leads, but not necessarily a happy ending- I spose the closest it gets to this are things like The Virgin Suicides or Girl/Interrupted- but they appear to be a lot more shallow than a film like this...
