Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This smart, tautly directed thriller from Wolfgang Petersen is about the cat-and-mouse games between a Secret Service agent named Horrigan (Clint Eastwood) and the brilliant, psychopathic assassin (John Malkovich) who's itching to get the President in his cross hairs. In the Line of Fire's back-story--Horrigan is haunted by his inability to prevent John Kennedy's assassination (Eastwood is computer-generated into archival footage)--is more than a little hokey, but the plotting itself is smartly, even ingeniously, constructed. Petersen manages a vice-like grip on the tension and Eastwood even gets to deliver an ever-more-timely lecture on the diminished nature of the office of President. Eastwood's as gruff and as infuriating to the by-the-book Powers That Be as ever and Malkovich oozes delightful menace. Rene Russo capably co-stars as a colleague with whom Horrigan gets friendly. --David Kronke

Synopsis

3.0 out of 5 stars A great film spoiled by bad editing (Collectors Edition!!), 3 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This is one of my favourite films, - a 5 star film, but this is not what I saw in the cinema - the DVD (UK region) is a version that has been edited presumably to fit within the 15 certificate bracket. There are a couple of annoying mistakes - such as when Clint shoots a bad guy and the gun does not make a sound (all we see is the bad guy clutching himsself and falling to the ground). Also, the villain has been sanitised by severely cutting the scene where he murders some innocent people - so he seems no where near as threatening. This edition is supposed to have extra footage, I am not sure where it is, but it does not make up for the footage that has been cut out.

I still love the film, it is one of Eastwood's best and Malkovich is outstanding, but I will be trying to get hold of an earlier release on VHS.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST THRILLERS OF THE NINETIES, 21 Nov 2002
By wdanthemanw "wdanthemanw" (Geneva, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
Yesterday, for the fifth time in ten years, I saw IN THE LINE OF FIRE. And I will see it some more times again. Why ?

I must admit that Clint Eastwood, since 25 years, is one of my favorite actors and directors. Who could have predicted, when Clint starred in the Leone's movies, that he will become the institution he is now ?

In this Wolfgang Petersen's movie, he plays the role of an aged Secret Service agent who cannot forget the day JFK died. Because he was there and couldn't give his life in order to save his President. As for the Harry Callaghan of DIRTY HARRY, reality stopped at this very moment for him.

Until the day a mad John MALKOVICH appears. From the past, it seems, because the only way to communicate with him is by phone, an antic object which creates the panic in the ranks of the superguys of the F.B.I.

IN THE LINE OF FIRE is a "thick" movie you can talk about for hours with your friends. It is also an intelligent movie, which is pretty rare nowadays.

A DVD zone your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling, tense and full of suspense., 12 April 2001
By Jenny (Dukinfield, Cheshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The teaming up of Clint Eastwood and John Malkovich was the idea of, what can I say, a mad genius! The two along side each other convey a bitter and chilling relationship that keeps you in suspense all throughout the movie. Though I must say Malkovich, as always conveys the most noticeable character and acheives it well as the sick and twisted but clever assassin Mitch Leary, who attempts to ruin the life of the American President's bodyguard - Frank Horrigan (Eastwood). Horrigan is determined to protect the President's life no matter what - even if it means being In The Line of Fire for him, because of his fail at protecting John F. Kennedy's life thirty years before hand. With the odd funny moment and sparks of romance this film is great entertainment for those who like fast, hot action.
