Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
In 1956 the title of his latest film, Up in the World accurately described Norman Wisdom's career. This was the great British comedian's fourth hit in as many years, this time finding himself employed as window cleaner to Lady Banderville (Ambrosine Phillpotts). Apart from having hundreds of windows to polish, things would be going fine for Norman if it weren't for the endless practical jokes played by Lady Banderville's son, Sir Reginald (Michael Caridia). However, when the irritating Regie is kidnapped, Norman has the chance to prove himself a hero, and it just might impress Jeannie Andrews too, his beautiful co-star Maureen Swanson, then making a name for herself in A Town Like Alice and The Spanish Gardener (both 1956). By now Norman Wisdom was set on a winning formula, working with much the same team as on his three previous smashes, including Jerry Desmonde as Major Willoughby, who had starred in both Trouble in Store (1953) and Man of the Moment (1955). Later, in Carry On Regardless (1961) Desmonde would make a single appearance with another British comedy institution, and interestingly Ambrosine Phillpotts would be there in the same film. Norman meanwhile, would go on to his good fortune in Just My Luck (1957). --Gary S. Dalkin

Synopsis
Norman's on the ladder to success when he accepts a new job as a window cleaner to wealthy Lady Banderville. But he's about to take many knocks on the way up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A smashing film - as with all of Norman's, 1 Nov 2002
In this one, he tries to work as a window cleaner in a huge manor house. However, someone is playing pranks. And Sir Reginald is always right.

When Sir Reginald forces Norman to take him away from the house in the dead of night, he gets kidnapped and, of course, Norman saves the day. However, all the evidence points to him, and as Sir Reginald cannot remember the incident, he is put in a labour house. An excellent film. You can't beat good old Norman.

5.0 out of 5 stars my favourite of Sir Norm's films., 15 Nov 2004

Coming clean as a closet Norman Wisdom fan is probably not the coolest thing to do but I don't care, there is a joyful innocence to these films which is hard to resist. This is my favourite. Robbie Williams-lookalike Norman gets a job as a window-cleaner at a stately home (filmed at Woburn Abbey incidentally). The entire household revolves around Sir Reginald, a bratty practical joke-loving kid who stands to inherit a small fortune. Norman gets unwittingly caught up in a kidnapping plot to abduct the .. er .. little darling. Sir Norman's critics claim he is too sentimental for their tastes, but apart from him crooning the odd love song to the girl of his dreams, the sentiment isn't as heavily laid on as they would have you believe. Great fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sir Norman on top form, 18 Feb 2009
By Bob Salter "Sandman" (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Up In The World [DVD] [1956] (DVD)
Norman Wisdom is most definitely a national treasure. He is Britains answer to many of those great silent comedians, and I believe if he had been born earlier he would have been a huge success. He looks comical and has the facial expressions to match. He also possessed the same athletic ability as the great Buster Keaton. His humour is of the same innocent simplicity. But most important of all is that he makes us laugh and for that alone his knighthood is well merited.

"Up in the World" 1956 is my personal favourite of his films. It follows the fluctuating fortunes of a window cleaner at a stately home who unwittingly becomes involved in the kidnap of young Sir Reginald. It contains what I consider to be many of British comedies funnier moments. I especially enjoyed Normans brief incarceration in prison where he unwittingly becomes "Mr Big", and his daring if fortunate escape whilst cleaning windows high up on the prison building in gale force winds. I can still see that flannel flying back into his face as he hurls it at the window whilst balancing precariously on the ladder. Then perhaps my favourite scene of all when he is pursued by legions of Police and the Army. As he flees he falls in the mud of a pig sty and a pigs food bowl becomes stuck to his head. He falls in bushes and is covered in leaves. When finally cornered at the gates he is congratulated by the Army Officer for being the first man on the scene, taking him for one of his men in Camouflage kit. Priceless!

I am very fond of Normans films and his innocent brand of humour has grown on me over the years. This film still makes me laugh and I have quoted many of the scenes. I guess if that makes me sound a little sad, then so be it, call me Mr Sad. If you like Sir Norman and his happy slapstick humour then you will not be disappointed with this film. It is a film where he is at the very peak of his form.
