4.0 out of 5 stars They'll tell you this is bad..., 11 Aug 2001
By Sandy (Aotearoa) - See all my reviews
...and maybe it is, by conventional movie-making standards. However, I greatly enjoyed this film due to it's unintentional hilarity. A later film in the Fu Manchu series, this is directed by Jess Franco, which tells me that a)the money was running out, and b)the money was running out. Franco handles it gamely, shoving in stock footage here and there, even reusing clips from the previous 'Brides of Fu Manchu.' Christopher Lee soldiers on bravely as Fu, the tallest Chinese man you'll ever see. Unable to move his face due to the heavy make-up, Lee still manages to exude an air of menace. The ludicrous plot involves Fu's dastardly plan to FREEZE THE OCEANS! Using secret crystals made out of OPIUM! The only force standing between Fu and world domination are a couple of portly English blokes who camp up their performances past all bounds of taste and decency. So, at least Fu isn't the only racial stereotype on display here. That said, this film works well as a parody of the franchise, and I guarantee you'll be laughing along with everyone else when Fu points menacingly to obvious stock footage of a dam collapsing. Or yet *another* fez-wearing Turk appears on-screen.

If like me you're a connoisseur of film-cheese, rate this a 4/5. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, rate this 2/5 and go browse the new releases instead.
