5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool to get rid of 'canvas blues', 12 April 2003
By Ozcan Gokce (Istanbul,TURKEY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In this approximately 2-hour video, Helen van Wyk paints the still-life painting displayed on the cover. She starts out with a blank white canvas, that notorious cause of intimidation in many painters, even the pros. She shows how a simple collection of objects and fruits, the likes of which can be found in any house, can be used as the subjects of a work of art. She uses black and white acrylic paint in the initial stages to establish the boundaries of and to draw the design, as well as to put in the tonal contrasts. Since acrylic dries almost immediately, she continues with oils to finish the painting. Her technique can be summarized as 'wet on dry' with respect to oils over acrylic, followed by 'wet in wet' during the oil painting stage. We are given the chance to see a professional artist during the actual realization of a painting. Ms Wyk shares with us both the joy and the small 'oops' of the painting process, in a most friendly manner. I think this video is an excellent means of conquering 'canvas blues', especially if you are an amateur artist with intermediate-advanced drawing skills who has been misled into thinking that the ability to paint is a divine attribute. It can also provide the necessary friendly push for late-returners to art. It is not, however, meant to be a technical guide for those without any experience in drawing or those wishing to learn details like how to prime a canvas or prepare oil paints from pigments in powder form. On the contrary, it is a lesson in the direct use of easily available paints and pre-primed canvases. I have found that the technique used by Ms Wyk is equally successful for purposes other than still-life painting, like portraits. I would strongly recommend it to anyone seriously interested in learning oil painting in the classical, figurative tradition of the great masters. I think it would be a valuable addition to the libraries of art clubs and schools.
