5.0 out of 5 stars violence on varos, 23 May 2004
This is a dark, at times grim and violent but enjoyable and clever outing for Colin Baker. Like Peter Davison and Sylvester MacCoy, Colin Baker is a typical John Nathan Turner kind of Doctor, one that does not immediately appeal in the same way as the first four Doctors, but who will defintiely grow on you eventually if you give him a chance or three. This tale is well suited to the colorful clown and his black heart, he fits in well and the character of Sil is sadistic and slimy in all the right ways. Martin Jarvis is good here too. This is a solid example of the black comedy and satire which makes the Colin Baker era totally unique. If they hadn't sacked him, he would probably have gone on to be a total legend, like the first five Doctors before him. Overall, exellent!

4.0 out of 5 stars Violent, 18 May 2002
By A Customer
Vengeance on Varos is one of the better '80s Whos. A study of how society becomes numb to the horrors broadcast as 'entertainment', Varos is notorious for it's violence (the Doctor sets up a weapon so tha it kills a gaurd as he runs round the corner, throws another two gaurds into an acid bath (''Excuse me if I don't join you'') and kills four more Varosians with a poisonous vine trap) and accused by many of practicing what it condemns. Still, it remains clever and entertaining, and benefits from a brilliantly enigmatic and unpredictable lead. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doctor Who from 1985., 6 Jan 2001
By chris-evans@ntlworld.com (Nottingham, England) - See all my reviews
The story starts with Stephen Yardley and his wife watching a virtually naked Jason Connery (son of Sean) being constrained by chains and tortured by lasers. Colin Baker's Doctor and Peri arrive on this disturbing planet, rescue the poor young man and find themselves on the run from the planet's authorities.

The storyline is strong enough, the populace entertained by sick television entertainment was quite prophetic ... and the adventure is at quite a fast pace. The problems are that Colin Baker is still difficult to like as the Doctor (although this is one of his better performances) and the sets belong in the seventies, not in the eighties. The guest stars include Stephen Yardley (as I mentioned earlier) and Martin Jarvis but the acting honours go to Nabil Shaban. Certainly worth watching if you haven't seen it before, but the previous adventure 'Attack of the Cybermen' was better.

Not bad. Didn't have a good plot though. At the beginning when they land on Varos, the Doctor just knocked the guard out immediatly. Read more
