Amazon.co.uk Review
A rash of daring bank robberies erupts, in which the bad guys all wear the masks of worse guys--former presidents (nice touch). Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), an impossibly named former football star who blew out his knee and became a crime-busting fed instead, figures out that none of the heists occur during surfing season, and all of them occur when, so to speak, surf's down. So obviously, he reasons, we're dealing with some surfer-dude bank robbers. He goes undercover with just such a group, led by a very spiritual, very guru-type guy played by Patrick Swayze, who has some muddled philosophies when it comes to materialism. If you can buy all that, this efficiently directed (by Kathryn Bigelow) action flick has some diverting moments (credit it, for example, for anticipating the extreme-sports fad). But Reeves's intelligent-sounding lines don't make him seem remotely intelligent, and that plot makes him look positively brilliant. --David Kronke

Efficiently directed by Kathryn Bigelow and featuring some diverting action scenes, 1991's Point Break can be credited with anticipating the extreme-sports fad. 5.0 out of 5 stars Homo Erotica, 20 Aug 2006
By Brendan O. Clarke "brendoclarke" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Point Break [DVD] [1991] (DVD)
Point Break is one of the quintessential rewatchable movies of the past 20 years. It's a safe bet that Point Break would be in my fav movie list. Released just before the mid-90's surge of super-advanced special effects that yielded such super-terrible movies as Twister, Independence Day, and pretty much anything involving the "Jerry Bruckheimer" production stamp, Point Break is nothing short of B-movie heaven, with all the familiar trappings thereof: rampant overacting, testosterone-laden dialogue, a series of highly implausible occurrences, and men determined to resolve everything with violence. It's fast-paced, deliriously stupid, and just suspenseful enough to keep your eyes glued to the screen.

At the same time, Point Break succeeds because its heart is always in the right place. Sure, it doesn't have the huge budget and nifty effects that characterized so many of the Hollywood blockbuster released in the past decade or so, but Point Break did manage to boast a plot and characters that were at least somewhat believable and well-developed, to go with lots of skillful direction from Kathryn Bigelow. And, of course, you get one completely iconic line from Keanu Reeves : "I am an EFF-BEE-EYE Agent!". His career was all downhill from that one, let me tell you.

Even the name of the hero is likably improbable: Johnny Utah (!)ha Jesus, played in slightly-less-wooden-than-usual fashion by Keanu Reeves in his pre-Speed days..
Check out the sexual chemistry between Bodhi and Johnny Utah. "Utah, you want me so bad its like acid in your mouth." Both men fight each other, wrestle in wet suits and sky dive together.

-Shootouts, fistfights, chases, a gratuitous car explosion, surfing, and skydiving: everything you could want in an action movie, and more!

-An ideal sunday afternoon would be to have a copy of the 'Big Wednesday' and 'Point Break', and 2 bottles of red wine. Tremendous.

4.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC YOUTH MOVIE, 27 Aug 2002
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Point Break sports a line-up of 90s stars like Keanu Reaves & Patrick Swayze. Johnny Utah (Keanu) is an FBI agent transferred to Los Angeles where the sunshine, surf and music take his fancy. Special Agent Utah goes undercover among the surfers of the Californian south coast to investigate a near perfect string of bank robberies. There he meets his dark alter ego called Bodhi (Swayze), who becomes a dangerous teacher to him. However, Johnny is quick on the uptake: he stalks his prey ever mindful of Bodhi’s most important lesson: If you want the ultimate thrill, you must be prepared to pay the ultimate price. Quite an entertaining movie although it is filled with all those familiar cliches of the teen movie genre, the most amusing being Keanu surfing in the stormy waves and yelling it out: “I am Johnny Yooootaw ...!

5.0 out of 5 stars a hard rockin' surfin' ripper of a film!, 28 Feb 2003
By A Customer
Point Break is a fast paced, stylish and original thriller which contains car chases, bank robberies and great surfing and sky diving scenes to take your breath away. Patrick swayze and keanu reeves both bust out great character performances as Bodhi and Johnny Utah and there are some really choice lines from the two lead boys as the film really gets cooking. Special mention needs to go to Swayze's majestic extreme sports mullet haircut which really kicks ass!(nice one Pat!) What can you say? this film has a very original and fresh plot and is full of great action (for fans of surfing and skydiving or otherwise) Watch out for a cameo appearance from Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis as a dodgy surfing badass. This is a great film with a really poignant ending. Great performances from John C.McGinlay and Gary Busey aswell and a quality rockin' soundtrack. WHAT A BEAUT! BUY IT!
