2.0 out of 5 stars A sad goodbye to the world's greatest comedy duo, 18 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This last movie of L&H's is painful to watch because of many reasons. The first scene sets the pace for the movie, with a few funny moments including Ollie doing his very last 'camera look'. After that the film loses it. But the most shocking thing is the appearance of Stan Laurel, who suffered a stroke at the time of filming. Oliver Hardy is almost recognisable, as he suffered a heart attack during the time of filming. His accent, by this point, has lost all of it's southern charm.
The story is OK and involves Stan and Ollie inheriting an island in the South Pacific, on which Uranium is discovered. On their way to claim their inheritance they meet a stateless chef and a stow-away. Not a bad story. If it had been made with Fox, 5 years earlier, it would have been a great film.
The supporting cast are foreign, so the voices had to be dubbed. However the lip synchronisation is awful and it sounds as if the microphone was placed above a toilet bowl! Also on the cover of the video the photograph is a classic Hal Roach still, not reflecting their looks in this film at all. It is terribly misleading. It's hard to watch this film without crying a little.
