5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, 22 Jan 2002

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
John Duigan has made some great films- such as 'Lawn Dogs', 'The Year My Voice Broke' and this...Noah Taylor (later to be seen in 'Shine', 'Lara Croft', 'Almost Famous' & 'Vanilla Sky')reprises his role from the previous film, 'The Year My Voice Broke'. He looks even more like a teenage Nick Cave!

The actors take on names close to their own- as is the case with Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton; is Duigan fusing their 'real'selves with his real memories that constitute this fiction?

The public school is as good as the one in 'If...'- the male-camaderie, the guy with the braces always saying the wrong thing, the forced dances...Newton & Taylor's romance is charming- and after a love-letter misunderstanding is cleared up, divine (if sadly cut short). Duigan's conclusion, including refs to Idi Amin, which leaves Taylor alone 'back home' is very heartbreaking...Naomi Watts ('Mullholland Drive', some TV programme about girls at a Catholic School from 1990) is divine in a supporting role. This is an excellent film, undercut with a teenage existentialism with Taylor's smoking while reading Camus or Sartre. Great stuff!

4.0 out of 5 stars an unsentimental story about meeting someone perfect, 21 Sep 2001
This film is the story of a boy and girl from seperate boarding schools in the fifties who sneak around and break into dorms to see each other when the teachers aren't looking. They quote song lyrics at the debate society and swap books by sartre and do not care what any one thinks about them being together. All the characters look and behave like real teenagers, there is no slushy music and no slushy scenes. This film was as engrossing as 'the straight story', simple and honest and brilliant.
