Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Jon Pertwee, the third actor to play Doctor Who, introduces an exclusive-to-video feature-length programme devoted to his role as the BBC's most famous time traveller. The tape is dominated by three complete episodes, each the final part of a serial, such that a plot synopsis would have made matters more comprehensible. "Inferno" (1970) is a tale of environmental peril involving a project to drill into the Earth's core; "Frontier in Space" (1973) showcases the last performance by the original Master, Roger Delgado; while "The Daemons" (1971) is chosen as the climax of Pertwee's own favourite Doctor Who story. It should be noted this episode is in black and white, the BBC having wiped the colour original from the archive.

There are very few personal reminiscences of the kind found in this video's companion volume The Colin Baker Years, though there are more diverse clips than in The Troughton Years. These include Pertwee's first appearance as the Doctor in "Spearhead from Space" (1970), an unused test version of a new title sequence, footage shot at a 20th anniversary celebration at Longleat in 1983, and a very entertaining introduction to the "Whomobile", as originally seen on Blue Peter in 1973.--Gary S. Dalkin

2.0 out of 5 stars A video that doesn't do Jon Pertwee justice, 24 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This video is meant to be a pleasant romp with the late Jon Pertwee about his time in the role of Doctor Who. Unfortunately, it never suceeds in it's endeavours. The format follows the previous Hartnell and Troughton videos - and similarly we get the occassional talk about the era and get to see three token episodes of stories from the time, which in and of themselves are good examples but which ultimately are pointless because you could later get them on video. You also get very little background details about the stories as a whole so the episodes are all the more isolated. You additionally get a bizarre explanation and clip of the aborted 70's alternate theme tune and a clip from blue peter. All in all a collection that does little to really examine and celebrate the Pertwee era, worth getting for completeness but doesn't do the late Jon Pertwee any real justice !

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother, 5 Oct 2003
By A Customer
There's nothing wrong with the content of the tape, and at the time it was originally released it was the only way to see any of the material, but the majority of it has now been released in it's complete form and those episodes which are in black and white on this tape have been recoloured by the restoration team and released. I've only given it it's one star for Jon Pertwee (despite the fact that he is very obviously reading from an autocue) and his one or two stories from his time on the show. A real shame they didn't us the Tom Baker years format on this tape while there was still time.
