2.0 out of 5 stars Watch this wartime L & H comedy with a group of friends., 13 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Some comedies come to life with an audience. AIR RAID WARDENS is a real "audience" picture, with Stan and Ollie bumbling their way through air-raid duty, first-aid practice, and spy-catching. As usual with Laurel & Hardy, you can see the jokes coming. Audiences loved this underrated film in '43. It's got some good scenes, but you'll either admire or hate the "sad" episodes where the boys have to play it straight.

2.0 out of 5 stars Depressing rather than funny., 1 Oct 2008
Some of the Laurel & Hardy films from the 1940s I'd been told were rubbish turned out actually to be pretty good. This, unfortunately, wasn't one of them. The plot involves Laurel and Hardy unable to join any of the armed forces and resorting to becoming air raid wardens in order to do their bit. It isn't long before they fall foul of Nazi spies. Filmed as this was during the war, it's full of patriotic propaganda. I may be in a minority, but I think that's just wrong for a Laurel & Hardy film. If it had all been played for laughs, then fine, but this film takes itself far too seriously. I mean, Nazis in a L & H film. It's like having the Taliban in an episode of Scooby Doo. The dynamic duo's characters are completely wrong. Can you imagine the Ollie of the Hal Roach years telling anyone he's 'not as good as other people'? Edgar Kennedy (one of L and H's regular foils from the Roach years) is wasted and what slapstick there is in the film is pretty leaden. For completists only.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth adding to your Laurel & Hardy collection., 13 April 2005

(REAL NAME)
One of the better 1940's movies from Laurel & Hardy. The pair own a bike shop that they close when they attempt to enlist in the services and leaving all of their debts behind them. Rejected by army, navy and air force they are forced to return and serve as air raid wardens. A series of mistakes leads to the pair losing that job aswell. They do however stumble across a group of Nazi spies and inform the authorities and end up as heros. A good collection of laughs, many of which have been used before in their classic shorts, My favourite part of the film is when a stray dog follows them into a general meeting causing chaos. This film has some classic gags and is well worth adding to your Laurel & Hardy collection.
