A Great Introduction to Tomiki Aikido, 11 Sep 2000
By A Customer
The style of Aikido that is being demonstrated is that of Tomiki Aikido. Kenji Tomiki (1900-1979) developed this style after studying for many years with the founder of Aikido. He later felt that Traditional Aikido needed a randori (sparring) element in order that the Aikido practitioner could test their techniques in a realistic manner. He devised Tomiki Aikido as a way of achieving this. This video assumes no knowledge on the part of the viewer and would therefore be great for a beginner of Tomiki Aikido. It begins by introducing the dojo (practice hall) and explains dojo etiquette and it also gives a brief history of Aikido and its founder Morihei Uyeshiba (1883-1969). The video then goes through the warm-up exercises and basics like Shikko (Knee Walking), breakfalling, Unsoku (Foot Movements). Next it shows the 17 basic techniques that make up the Randori No Kata of the Tomiki system and also some counters-techniques. The Kata is not shown in enough detail to learn from without instruction, although it would be good as a supplement to your training. Dr.Lee Ah Loi 7th Dan demonstrates the Aikido on this video and she also has a book 'Tomiki Aikido' . If you are interested in practicing Tomiki Aikido, then I would really recommend the book and video as they can only help with your study. The only problem I can see with this video is the introductory section, for the following reason. Once you have seen the beginning with the dojo etiquette, history and the warm-up exercises once, you never need to watch that part again so this means fast forwarding the video to the techniques section. All in all a good introduction to Tomiki Aikido, it should be watched by all Aikidoka whatever their style; after all Aikido is the 'Way of Harmony'.
