5.0 out of 5 stars An exquisite painting that also moves, 25 Mar 2000
Visually stunning, despite the exceptionally low - budget production in a politically hostile time. Paradjanov also spent many years in prison in Siberia. I met someone who knew him who said that he was completely mad and used to walk around in a great big coat in order to be able to steal bits and pieces for his films - we are talking low budget! But he far excels many modern, technically superb filmmakers with pure imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visually stunning, 28 Nov 2000

"The Colour of Pomegranates" is loosely based upon the life of a famous Armenian poet, but dispenses with narrative to present disconnected "scenes from the life of" rather than a biography. Thus the film is visual in its effect.

"Legend of the Suram Fortress" is loosely based upon a Georgian fairy tale. Likewise to the first film, rather than storytelling it becomes, as one of the reviewers put it, "like a painting that moves".

Both films are stunning in their visual effect but though relatively short do require some patience. The discontinuities of shots I sometimes found a little disconcerting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very beautiful and mysterious film, 9 Aug 2000
I detest "art" films but the two on this video have a wonderful atmosphere which should appeal to anyone with an interest in Georgia or Armenia. The first film is in Armenian, the second in Georgian and both have English subtitles. The second film also has some beautiful singing in Georgian.
