Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
Almost universally derided on its first release as the worst of the Star Trek movies to date, The Final Frontier may just have been the victim of bad press. Following in the wake of the massively successful fourth instalment The Voyage Home didn't help matters (notoriously, even-numbered entries are better), nor did having novice director and shameless egomaniac William Shatner at the helm. But if the story, conceived and co-written by Shatner, teeters dangerously on the verge of being corny at times, it redeems itself with enough thought-provoking scenes in the best tradition of the series, and a surprisingly original finale. Granted there are a few too many yawning plot holes along the way, and the general tone is over-earnest (despite some painfully slapstick comedy moments), but the interaction of the central trio (Kirk, Spock and McCoy) is often funny and genuinely insightful; while Laurence Luckinbill is a charismatic adversary as the renegade Vulcan Sybok. True, the rest of the cast scarcely get a look in, and the special effects betray serious budgetary restrictions, but with a standout score from Jerry Goldsmith and a meaty philosophical premise to play around with, Star Trek V looks a lot more substantial in retrospect. Certainly it's no worse than either Generations or Insurrection, the next "odd-numbered" entries in the series.

On the DVD: This is a non-anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) print, with only two trailers as extra features. Quite frankly, Star Trek fans are being short-changed. --Mark Walker

Synopsis
Adventure has no limits when Kirk and the entire Enterprise crew are hijacked by a renegade Vulcan.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pants, 10 Jan 2003
There is clearly a consensus among some elements of the Star Trek fan fraternity that the franchise can do no wrong and every last TV episode and movie should be placed on an altar and worshipped. However, a more objective viewpoint will quickly conclude that this fifth movie offering stinks beyond belief. Whoever let William Shatner sit in the Director's chair is probably living with that decision - it must haunt their every waking moment. The plot is bizarre, the Enterprise looks rubbish, the denoument is the oddest thing I have ever seen - and don't even get me started on Uhura's song and dance routine, which is clearly supposed to add some sort of 'erotic' element but unfortunately you can't beat the 7 signs of ageing, lieutenant. Kirk (as you would expect) dominates nearly every scene in the film - Shatner clearly thought that the comedy of the fourth film should be replicated here, but unfortunately the mock-slapstick approach (Scotty knocking himself out on an exposed pipe, for heaven's sake) is about as funny as dying alone in space. Actually I think there is one scene that Kirk isn't in - I'm sure this will be rectified when they release the 'Directors Cut'.

I beg you, buy 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' instead. Please.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good example of Star Trek at its best, 17 Dec 2002
By A Customer
Star Trek V is not the poor film it is often made out to be. While the visual effects are not as stunning as Star Trek 3, for example, the plot is quite engaging and the acting is fine by any standards. After that dreaded whale film (ST4) this film returns to the spirit of Star Trek, and is much more in the vein of the Original Series and the best film Star Trek 2. This DVD is of good quality and has teaser and theatrical trailers, which are interesting to see. It could do with more, but all in all it is a good buy and leagues above the worst of the Star Trek films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Under-rated of the Star Trek films, 20 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This film, while certainly not the best of the Star Trek films, is definitely not as bad as is made out. The early scenes with Kirk, McCoy and Spock at Yosemite stand out as terrific writing and great characterisation. And where else could you see Captain Jim Kirk challenge "God" in the climatic final scenes. I'm only sorry that Star Trek Generations ignored Kirk's feeling that he would die alone.
