Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Given the presence of both Steve Martin and John Candy, one would expect this John Hughes comedy to be much, much funnier than it is. Certainly it's not for lack of effort on the part of its stars. Martin is an uptight businessman trying to get home from New York for the holidays. But one thing after another gets in his way--most of it having to do with Candy, a boorish but well-meaning boob who takes a liking to him. Together they travel all over the map; no matter how hard Martin tries to shake him, he can't. But Hughes's writing is never as sharp as it should be and this film winds up being only intermittently humorous. --Marshall Fine

Synopsis
A successful advertising executive flies from New York to Chicago to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family. He finds himself seated next to a brash, talkative salesman, and when their plane is re-routed the mis-matched pair stumble from one comic disaster to another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Nil - Martin/Candy/Hughes One, 19 Jan 2004
By V. WILLIAMS "veejaydubya" (Bucks, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Amazon have their review wrong in my opinion.

This classic piece of cinematic work charts more than just a disastrous journey across a snow-bound North America by two hopelessly mismatched travellors. The comedy comes thick and fast between on one hand an up-tight high-flying advertising executive, Martin and on the other a big-mouthed but big-hearted slob of a man, Candy.

Martin is at the pinnacle of his profession and has all the rewards that go with it, a lovely wife, healthy kids, a luxory home and a very nice watch. He is used to getting what he wants when he wants it.

Candy scrapes by as a shower curtain-ring salesman because his customers like him. His rewards are hinted at by the fact that he doesn't have a very nice watch.

The real journey, I hinted at, is where Martin eventually discovers enough humility to take a serious look at someone a lot less fortunate than himself and learns that "by the grace of God, goes he".

All the crazy comic situations that the hapless pair fall into during their challenging journey come to focus sharpened by a good helping of pathos in the final five minutes.

I regularly watch this film for a good laugh and the feel-good factor.

If you have seen this movie and agree with Amazon, then, "EX--CUSE--MEEEeee". If you haven't, then please make up your own mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marshall is not fine. This is a classic., 8 Mar 2007

Where can I start on this fantastic film.

For a start I have watched this film easily over a 100 times and like everybody has said it makes you laugh each time you watch it. The pairing of John Candy and Steve Martin is genius and is a shame that they were not paired up again for another film. Comedy, Adventure, Frustration, Action and Emotion this film has it all. Sadly as we all know John Candy is no longer with us, and the sight of him twiddling his thumbs in the train station and clenching his hat at the end thinking about his deceased wife is a tearjerking moment. This aside the film will not disappoint and is a true classic in its own right. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily one of the best films of all time!, 16 Sep 2006
By Mr Cheese (Pluto, The Solar System) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is quite literally one of the best movies of all time. It holds back on action, suspense, special effects, and uses the power of John Hughes' directing to create a moving, emotional, and of course incredible humerous film. Throughout, you'll often be moved by how certain events that happen to the character are so true. Such quotes being "When I ever going to wake up" during times of frustration. The end to the film is perfect to, and with a combination of lovely music and just simple production, its a touchking way to round off an excellent film.
A must in any DVD collection, because you'll never get tired of it!
