4.0 out of 5 stars My Foolish Heart, 26 Aug 2002
What a shame that this film is not available on video. It is an excellent, bittersweet love story with one of Susan Hayward's and Dana Andrew's finest performances.

A trusting and naive college girl named Eloise Winters falls for a charming but irresponsible man on the eve of the USA's involvement in the Second World War. He woos her with his charm and wit whilst she is on the brink of a relationship with a solid and responsible young man, who, unfortunately for Eloise, she ignores for the charms of Dana Andrew's character
Although some reviewers claim My Foolish Heart is little more than an old-fashioned weepie, the movie actually has many sound virtues. The script is sharp and realistic, with some welcome touches of unexpected humor. And don't forget Victor Young's musical score.
Dana Andrews and the supporting players do much fine work. Do watch out for Hayward's supportive father who only married her mother because of Irving Berlin and Chinese Lanterns. It's Hayward who truly wraps up the film with her outstanding performance. She may not always be entirely convincing, especially in some of her early scenes as the innocent schoolgirl. But when the script turns a little darker, she reponds with an acting job that is stunning and deeply felt. She really gets to the heart of Eloise's fear of settling for second best.
If you want to watch a film that, in my opinion hasn't dated with the subject of romance and falling for the wrong man, this film is a must.

Anyone who watches this film, and afterwards can say 'Poor Uncle Wiggly' without at tear in their eye, is a harder person than me.
