5.0 out of 5 stars A classic example of retro brilliance., 11 Jan 2002
By nickb@ftr.co.uk (London, England) - See all my reviews
In the sixties this was possibly a mediocre film of our greatest football year. Thirty years later however Goal is as collectable and nostalgic as Charlie Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy in that it takes us back to a distant era totally alien to anyone below the age of 35. Granted the football coverage isn't great but that isn't what Goal is all about ( in 2002 anyway ) - watch the opening sequence and listen to the music and you'll get my gist, this is classic stuff perfect for post pub, late evening viewing with a few mates. But it doesn't stop there, the narration is pure Chumley ( not sure how to spell this ) Warner, the one liners stunning and pregnant pauses the work of an unknowing genius - it sounds like the bloke from the clangers. The tension is built slowly and the description of the various teams and their various Stars as they disembark their planes at Heathrow keeps you smiling. If you like seventies retro, Curtis Mayfield / Marvin Gaye, love football, and have a sense of humour you will treasure this video and get excited everytime you show it to unwitting friends. a three word summary - Hilarious, nostaligic, genius. Buy this video now but save your first viewing for 11:30 on a Friday or Saturday night and you wont regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goal 1966 - DVD SOON PLEASE!, 14 Jun 2002
All I want to know is when is this fabbo film coming out on DVD?
Brilliant Fandabbiedosie, Greatstuff, Wacky, Quaint, Cholmondeley Warner-ish, of it's time! AND what a great time it must have been to live in GB.... No steps, No S Club no Pete Waterman, no big brother, no blind date, No plastic cars, No railtrack, no tony blair, no pot noodle, no world wide terrorism,
Just great genuine achievers...Beatles, Kinks, Stones, Who and of course ...Banks, Wilson, Cohen, Stiles, Charlton, Moore, Ball, Hunt, Charlton, HURST, Peters.... Proper football, played by proper footballers, manged by a proper manager. Just brilliant.. the stuff that dreams are made of.... But it actually happened! And this film captures it superbly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Englands finest hour!!, 18 April 2007
By dave fisher "davexfisher" (merseyside, england) - See all my reviews

I was only four when this World cup final was played, but like most people I have seen the final many times. The official fifa film of the 66 World Cup Finals is superb.

Shot in a documentary style, it provides all the atmosphere and excitement of the event and shows all the great moments, Charlton's great goal against Mexico and the brutal tackles on Pele. Particularly good is the build up to the day of the final and of course the final itself. The celebrations after the match are superb as well.

I have to say, it is one of the very best films on football, I heartily reccomend it great fun. One small criticism, when is coming out on DVd?

1.0 out of 5 stars dissapointing
This event is part of our football history- the proudest moment in English football. This is not the right place to view the wonders of the world cup victory, however. Read more
