Amazon.co.uk Review

Clint Eastwood's 1978 comedy Every Which Way But Loose introduces Filo Beddoe, a truck driver and mechanic whose daily life is an absurd grind. He's constantly coming up short on money, love and anything else to help him get through the day, while also saddled with a loony mother (deliciously played by Ruth Gordon), a best friend (Geoffrey Lewis) who's not too swift on the uptake and an orangutan named Clyde who fights almost as well as Clint. While moonlighting as a bare-knuckle fighter, Clint finally meets the girl of his dreams (Sondra Locke), a snooty country singer who rebuffs him even as he pursues her, trailed by bikers and brawlers. It's Eastwood's magnetism and charm that make this more than a mere string of comic sketches, and things move along quickly enough to be entertaining, if a little thin. Clyde is a natural scene-stealer, but it's Ruth Gordon's crazy, cranky old coot who steals the film. --Robert Lane

Synopsis

5.0 out of 5 stars Right turn Clyde, 3 Jan 2001
By A Customer
How can I describe this film.......well you either love it or hate it. It has to be one of the oddest movies from the 70's and especially for the star Clint Eastwood. Eastwood plays the role of Philo Beddoe a truck driver who is also a bare fist fighter. The film follow's Beddeo as he tries to find a woman who he has fallen in love with who keeps giving him the slip, during the course of his journey he gets into fights and various other hilarious situations as he is persued by the police and a group of bikers called the black widows (take note of the cheesy music when they turn up). But the real star of the film is Clyde the orangutan, it is worth seeing the film for him alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ruth Gordon And Clyde Steal The Show, 23 Jul 2006

EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE is a comedy which stars Clint Eastwood as an itinerant prize fighter who looks for illegal bouts featuring heavy betting. He falls in love with a country and western singer who leaves him, causing a lengthy chase episode in which Clint is trying to find his girl friend while angry bikers and cops are pursuing hin. The humor is supplied mostly by Clint's constant sidekick, an orangutan named Clyde, and his agent's outrageous mother played by Ruth Gordon.

The cast also includes Sondra Locke, Geoffrey Lewis, Beverly D'Angelo and Walter Barnes. The director is James Fargo. The movie is definitely not a work of art but it is a very funny farce which is quite enjoyable if you don't take it too seriously.
