Product Description

Synopsis
Erik, a fine example of Vikinghood, one day questions the ethics of his livelihood, raping and pillaging, so he sets out for enlightenment, and the gods of Valhalla. His men become adept at creating chaos on this wacky adventure.

From the Back Cover
This is the story of a Viking Warrior who thought there must be more to life than rape and pillage.

Erik's doubts about his lifestyle begin when he inadvertantly falls in love with a rather pretty girl he has just killed. Nt that he meant to kill her you understand, but this being the legendary Age of Ragnarok, killing people is rather in fashion and mishaps are bound to occur.

In fact, any Viking warrior who hasn't killed at least one innocent person by the lunch break is generally reckoned to be a bit of a rotten apple.

So Erik sets off for Asgaard - the fabled City of the Gods - along with his unruly band of followers:Thorfinn the Skull, Sven the Beserk, Ulf the Maddeningly Calm (Sven the Beserk's father), Harald the Missionary (17 years without a single convert), Lief the Lucky (who is unfortunately drowned on his first day at sea), Ivar the bonelss, Odd the Coal-Biter (there really was a Viking named that) and the rest of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just funny (and Erik was not Swedish), 27 Mar 2003

This review is from: Erik The Viking [1989] [DVD] (DVD)
This movie is much more than a funny satire, although it contains hilarious scenes with vikings (by the way, Erik was not Swedish but Norwegian), kings, politicians (maintaining optimism while their island is literally sinking into and below the sea), and gods (depicted as children!).

I see it mainly as a highly poetic description of the human search for dignity and meaning, cunningly wrapped in a very entertaining disguise.

Most reviewers in my own country missed all but some very simple points about this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet brilliance, 8 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Erik The Viking [1989] [DVD] (DVD)
This movie is so funny - but if you think thats all there is to it, then you're missing the point.

There are magnificently funny performances from the likes of John Cleese and Tim Robbins, but the funniest is definately the underrated Tim McInnery as Sven the Berserker.

Erik is a modern swede in a viking world, with an adventurers spirit and an unstoppable determination. He challenges the ideals of his compadres and takes them (and you) to the end of the world, where in an unrealisitic environment, he finds realism at its most brutal.

My favourtie movie of all time!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is such a brilliantly funny movie. Second to none, 29 Aug 2000

I thoroughly enjoyed this masterpiece of humour. The combination of viking myth, wonderful tale and humorous setting is great, and this is a must see for anyone who can appreciate such things as Monty Python or the books of Douglas Adams.
