5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable, 25 Nov 2006
Mesmerising and incredibly brave performance from Al Pacino. On one level, it's a classic 'cop goes under cover to catch a killer' story, on another it raises some disturbing questions about society's attitude to gay men and gay sex, and how gay men themselves act out the hatred dished out to them from parents and society. Real NY fetish clubs and punters were used in the movie and it shows. Although the movie is set very much at the end of the 70s, it is remarkable how little things have changed. Yes, poofs are now acceptable on prime-time TV, as long as no one has to think about them having sex, and certainly not without a condom. Julian Clary almost got crucified for mentioning fisting on TV. This is a great movie. Apparently, Marc Almond's favourite film. The sort of film that gets better and deeper each time you watch it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A young Pacino distubingly deep in character, 3 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This film shocks from start to finish with Pacino deep undercover on the trail of a violent serial killer in the gay community. This is vintage Pacino as you have never seen before. Guaranteed to leave you speechless. I believe this film was originally banned all over the place and it has never had much air time as a result. A MUST SEE for Pacino fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars REMAKE PLEASE, 17 May 2003
By P. Zijlstra (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
Film begins in a fair neutral way with a notice. But from the beginning you’re being pushed towards a very subversive environment/scene. It shoves you to a setting with violent bitches, very brute murders and people leading double lives. The film lacks an explanation for this view, total lack of balance. If, in reference to the notice at the beginning of the film, this is a view on modern society it’s very crooked and insulting. When you’re not an insider you get the impression that a guy in leather equals disgust and cruising attracts this kind of killer.
Again this view doesn’t do justice to reality: in this film you are looking at a niche, within a niche, within a niche in which a series of murders happens to appear that’s being pulled to being the normal situation within this gay leather subculture. But to see that the viewer is being led a stray I think he/she will have to be either an insider, someone with a certain level of intelligence and/or a broad and open view on society as it really is. Just maybe a number of killings of- and by gay people are the result of heterosexual society’s suppression and repulse of people being gay and living their gay lives openly.
Now this stands apart from my view on the film as a detective. It’s a reasonably good one, but maybe we could have gotten more hints during the cause of the film. The dark setting gives the film a very good tension. The questioning at the police station binds the psychic pressure on the people within the scene to the actual plot. To my view this is realistic but one gets the opinion (again) that all leather gays don’t have personality. Also the pressure on the undercover guy gets more and more. This is understandable if you include the fact that it’s a straight guy that HAS to fit in with a “butch” gay subculture although he doesn’t complain much to his superiors. But again I’ll have to say that the “butch” side of this subculture is over-exposed, which gives the 2-dimensional viewer a very distorted and unfair picture. Fully understandable how the gay community reacted. Hé Friedkin, it’s necessary to adjust your notice at least!! (Notwithstanding Pacino’s good acting)
