Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A purely tasteless, moronic, guilty pleasure. Director Harold Ramis employs a mixture of Mad magazine National Lampoon maturity and Saturday Night Live sarcasm in this goofball golf comedy set on the grounds of a posh country club. Somewhere buried in the slapstick antics, drug references, Marx Brothers-like insults, and gratuitous sex scenes are the intertwined, forgettable subplots of a poor caddie (Michael O'Keefe) trying to earn enough cash to attend college, and golf-tournament and class battles between rich and even richer snobs. Mainly, Ramisjust lets his colourful group of eccentrics crash into each other, relying on several inspired performances to create several hilarious moments of sketch comedy. Most come from the trio of Bill Murray (playing a vile, obsessed groundskeeper engaged in a one-man war with a charismatic and very stuffed gopher), Rodney Dangerfield (basically recreating his crude stand-up routine), and Chevy Chase (who looks bemusedly stoned throughout). Quotable favourites include Murray's acted-out fantasy of winning the Masters, his tall tale about caddying for the Dalai Lama, an overreaching priest's rain-soaked golf game, Dangerfield's verbal assault on the club's uptight dining patrons, and Chase's lesson on the essence of golf ("Be the ball, Danny"). A perfect double feature with other comparably crass films such as National Lampoon's Vacation or Stripes. --Dave McCoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Golf... Only Fun!, 4 Jul 2004
This review is from: Caddyshack [DVD] [1980] (DVD)
There are only two reasons why Golf is a worthwhile sport. They are 'Happy Gilmore', and this film.

Starring a stellar 80's comedy cast this is film is great fun, and even stands up to this very day. Similar to many 80's comedy films (like the 'National Lampoon's Vacation' series and 'Animal House') this features plenty of humour, some crude, and attractive women, topless!

In all seriousness this is a very funny and good film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection, 21 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This has got to be one of the funniest comedy films of all time. Constant laughs from start to finish, I'm just mesmerised how they let such a pathetic effort as Caddyshack 2 into the cinemas. It was an embarassment, considering how classy the original was. Bill Murray is on top form, Chevy Chase as witty as ever, and the irreverent Rodney Dangerfield guarantees a laugh a minute. If you haven't seen this, I guarantee 100% you'll love every minute of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Harold Ramis is a GENIUS!, 25 Jul 2000
This review is from: Caddyshack [DVD] [1980] (DVD)
I bought this DVD yesterday, having enjoyed "Caddyshack II" and vaguely remembering bits of this one. I must admit - the film is absolutely hilarious! I can't really describe it's highlights through fear of spoiling it for everyone. Bill Murray is great as the dopey, Gopher-hunting Carl Spackler and Rodney Dangerfield's role as Al Czervik raises many laughs at the expense of Judge Smails (played by Ted Knight). Prude old ladies, hyperactive young caddies, pompous rich 'high-society' snobs, gophers... none of them are safe from Caddyshack's jokes. One brilliant film!

Only one moan - surely they could've at least fit one special feature onto the disc á la "Blazing Saddles"?
