5.0 out of 5 stars A classic example of the power of cinema, 9 Dec 2001

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Jean Cocteau was a poet- the images in films such as this and 'Orphee' are among the most powerful that the cinema has ever seen. So, it's in black and white and is silent...so? You will see this film and the wonder it sets off in your mind will transcend the 'limitations' of monochrome...Do you want to see what a dream looks like? Do you want to see a film that could only work as a film? This is what the novel fails to capture. This is why televsision is a banal form. This is epic-imagist poetry for those that can't connect to the dull-poets of today (excepting Seamus Heaney). It feels like Lorca at times: Federico Garcia Lorca in images...Cocteau came out of the surrealist movement and this is a crwoning achievment- equal to anything else in cinematic history (Metropolis; The Seventh Seal; Jules et Jim; Taxi Driver; Rashomon; Un coeur en Hiver; If...; Il Conformista; Andrei Rublev...)This is a film that should be seen by everyone- and one that everyone should like...
