5.0 out of 5 stars An unforgetable adventure, 5 Jan 2006
The first time I watched this was during a spectacular storm, but I was so captivated by the images on the screen I hardly paid it any attention. This is completely unparalleled footage of Irving Johnson’s journey around Cape Horn at the early part of the 20th Century in a sailing ship. Equally as good as the terrific images of waves roaring over the deck and tearing the sails and mast of the ship is the commentary by Johnson as an old man. Johnson vividly explains to the viewer whom every man is with such great respect and familiarity that it is with no trouble that you find yourself drawn into the adventure. Some parts are humorous, greatly attributed to Johnson’s lively commentary, others are haunting as you see two smiling, active figures and hear ‘two days later they were washed overboard’ spoken over the top.

Historically this is fascinating. It gives a remarkable insight to what life was like on some of the large last sailing ships. You can see the tough way of life and the men’s’ strange enthusiasm and love of the ship and life as one of the crew.

The one problem is that this is no DVD recording of this at present, so when VHS fades away this might too.

It took me a while to write this review, I wanted to give justice to breathtaking and wonderful film that shouldn’t be forgotten.
