The opening bars of this cd are SO wonderful that it raises goosepimples every time I hear it. And they keep coming back throughout these Karajan recordings of Strauss's earliest tone poems.
Strauss (just like Mendelssohn) is sometimes written off as a bourgeois composer because he was happily married and did not lead the bohemian type of life considered de rigueur for an artist in order to be taken seriously and who enjoyed commercial succes early in life (not done! succes should come shortly before the twilight years and preferably after), but these tone
poems testify as to why that succes was (and is) fully justified.
Karajan, who in the Thirties conducted Strauss under the master's supervision (in a relationship resembling that of Mahler and conductor Bruno Walter), acquits himself nobly of the task and turns these performances into some memorable music indeed.
