Amazon.co.uk Review

"I see dead people," whispers little Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), scared to affirm what is to him now a daily occurrence. This peaked nine-year old, already hypersensitive to begin with, is now being haunted by seemingly malevolent spirits. Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is trying to find out what's triggering Cole's visions but what appears to be a psychological manifestation turns out to be frighteningly real. It might be enough to scare off a lesser man, but for Malcolm it's personal--several months before, he was accosted and shot by an unhinged patient, who then turned the gun on himself. Since then, Malcolm has been in turmoil--he and his wife (Olivia Williams) are barely speaking, and his life has taken an aimless turn. Having failed his loved ones and himself, he's not about to give up on Cole. The Sixth Sense, M Night Shyamalan's third feature, sets itself up as a thriller, poised on the brink of delivering monstrous scares, but gradually evolves into more of a psychological drama with supernatural undertones. Many critics faulted the film for being mawkish and New Age-y, but no matter how you slice it, this is one mightily effective piece of filmmaking. The bare bones of the story are basic enough, but the moody atmosphere created by Shyamalan and cinematographer Tak Fujimoto made this one of the creepiest pictures of 1999, forsaking excessive gore for a sinisterly simple feeling of chilly otherworldliness. Willis is in his strong, silent type mode here, and gives the film wholly over to Osment, whose crumpled face and big eyes convey a child too wise for his years; his scenes with his mother (Toni Collette) are small, heartbreaking marvels. And even if you figure out the film's surprise ending, it packs an amazingly emotional wallop when it comes, and will have you racing to watch the movie again with a new perspective. You may be able to shake off the sentimentality of The Sixth Sense but its craftsmanship and atmosphere will stay with you for days. --Mark Englehart

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films in recent times, 20 July 2003
The Sixth Sense is an absolute gem, it is one of those challenging films that will stick in your mind and have you thinking about it for weeks after watching it. The plot is downright genuis, it`s so cleverly and precisely orchestrated that the resulting twist will just leave your jaw rightfully on the floor! The twist is so shocking, I will avoid the overwhelming temptation to give it away, watching it in ignorance will ultimately have the best effect. The cast is superb, Hollywood superstar Bruce Willis gives a refreshing change of pace performance as award winning child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe. Joining him is the critically acclaimed child actor Haley Joel Osment, last seen in Artificial Intelligence. The acting talents of this young boy are phenomenal, I have never seen such powerful presence, he is mature beyond his years.Haley thoroughly deserved recognition in the form of an Oscar nomination for his role as `Cole`; a gifted young boy with the exceptional ability of having the sixth sense. Possessing this gift however only serves to create fear in the mind of a nine year old, and scepticism in everyone around him. Cole experiences terrifying, unwanted visits from the spiritual world, which inevitably leads to his social isolation. Dr. Crowe recognises Coles behaviour, and remembers many years back when he had a patient with the same symptoms. This patient however left a painful impact on his conscience, as he was unable to help. Dr. Crowe then seeks to redeem himself by doing everything in his power to help troubled Cole.As Cole is alone in seeing and hearing these suffering spirits, it is also he who must help them rest. To do this Cole must confront his nightmare. It is only with Dr. Crowe`s suggestion to listen to them, he makes the discovery that they are not there to haunt him, but instead only want his assistance in their unfinished business. With the riveting intensity you`ll find thoroughly chilling and utterly forgettable, The Sixth Sense is a must see movie. The 2 disc collectors edition has wonderful special features, including exclusive interviews with the cast and writer/director.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great moviemaking, 6 Feb 2004
By David J. Niblett - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Forget anything negative you may have heard from "clever" critics, this is a sensational debut from young filmmaker M.Night Shyamalan.
Yes it is all a build up to a twist, but what a twist !!!
I have never watched a film with a more stunning moment of realisation than this, it only asks that you sit back and enjoy the ride, it is a piece of entertainment after all.
Add in great acting from Bruce Willis and the extrordinary Haley Joel Osment, and this is an altogether unforgetable movie.

Only one problem though .. how on earth does the director follow it up ? up till now the answer is, he can't.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truely Amazing Movie, 17 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sixth Sense [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
The Sixth sense is a brilliant movie, the sharp cinematography the subtle creepy images and wonderful performances make this one of the best films of 1999. Haley Jole Osment is simpley the best child actor I have ever seen and plays the role of Cole Sear, the child who sees ghost of the dead with his sixth sense to perfection. Bruce Willis is Excellent as Mallcolm crowe the child Psychologist who seems to be tormented by ghost of a different nature. And in outstanding supporting roles both Toni Collette (Coles mother Lynn) and Oliva Williams (Mallcolm's wife Anna) are both very good indeed. The screenplay is great and you always fully belive what you are seeing, which brings us too the infamous twist what is both good and bad at the same time on the good side , its an amazzing turn around to a story which you probley think you totally understand however on the bad side the fact that it is so obvious means you will have already guessed it, but this dosent take anything away from this pice of work as Overall This movie is simply stunning.
