You could never accuse Lorin Maazel of featureless music-making, and this new Stravinsky disc has all the virtuosity you'd expect from a high-performance maestro at the controls of a thoroughbred orchestra. Maazel opts for the original 1911 version of Petrushka, its perfect combination of French delicacy and Russian vigour making this score the masterpiece it is. If anything's missing, it's a sense of vulnerability in the characterisation. These are, after all, puppets with human qualities and failings, and Maazel rather undersells the emotion that lies behind the sonic allure of the music. This isn't a problem in The Song of the Nightingale, which has all the sensuousness and poetry this magical and still underrated piece needs. The closing two minutes, with the "Fisherman's Song" fading wistfully yet calmly away, is alone worth the price of this disc. Fireworks makes a brash and breezy conclusion to the programme, though its surface excitement would have worked better as an opener. Up-front but realistic sound helps makes this a worthwhile disc overall, with Maazel and the Vienna Phil' doing their utmost to put "Nightingale" back in the active repertoire where it belongs. --Richard Whitehouse
